Where is my community?
    #4817443 -

Every one of my family members lives about an hour or more away. I only talk to one of my neighbors, and I don't really know his last name. Everyday I pass thousands of people I've never seen before. At my job I tell them all to have a nice day.

Then I come online here and feel a little more at home. But at the same time, you are all just strangers, and I have only conversed personally with a few of you. But all the same, I love you guys because you are the only community I have.

There is no longer an American community. The urban sprawl has destroyed it. Being involved in the community used to mean knowing your neighbors and socializing with those in your town, now you have to join organizations.

My bestfriend and roommate will eventually move out, all the people I become close with will go away to persue their career or whatever. Why can't we just stay put anymore? Why can't children grow up in the same house that their parents did, and have their grandparents live with them?

We are so separate, we are so crowded, we are so lonely. When will we have a community again?

i emphathize with your feelings. how ironic that the more people we pack into one space, the less those people interact.

seriously though, if you make the effort to get out past your safety zones and check out some scenes out there, you will find community. Its all about trying things and doing things. i know it sounds cheezy but clubs and groups and stuff are a good deal.

Join a martial arts club and all of a sudden your part of a community. Not only do you have all the members of your club who you will get to know and who you will share an interest with, you will then be part of a larger global community who shares that interest.

or join an art class or a yoga class or go to a rave or whatever. there are thousands of communities in any large city, but the trick is you have to go to them. You will never have a community of people come knock on your door and say hi Dromni, were your new friends! its up to you to make the first move (except with jehovas witnesses and mormons and stuff... )

oh and for what its worth: even though us shroomerites are "strangers" i dont feel you need to see some one with your eyes to know them. some people here i feel i know quite well and we have relationships that go back a long way. i value those relationships.

but i agree its not nearly enough. real human contact is a must. So get out. Its all about having the courage to step out those doors ...

I don't have time to go out places and join clubs and shit. I understand what you are saying, but that is not a real community. I'm talking about being BORN into a community, not just finding one and joining it.

Having such ephemeral relationships with neighbors, co-workers, and classmates feels a lot like what I would assume it would be like to grow up with a new stepdad every couple years. It just isn't right.

I watched an interesting movie called "The End of Suburbia" recently. You might download it as a torrent file and check it out. Pretty sobering stuff.

You need to visit some Goa parties. I attended my first not very long ago and never have I had such a great sense of community. I felt I could walk up to anyone and start a meaningful conversation. (I was completely sober and I'm a rather shy, quiet guy too.) Very open and friendly scene!

Well...................

I would like to have been born with millions of dollars, loving parents, a huge family that got together every month, a hot ass girl next door who took my virginity at 14, perfect grades in school, every person just dying to be my friend. But............ I got the worst possible start

I am not sure I get where your coming from ?

A community ? or a handout ?

Even people who are born into your "picture" still must put the work into it. They must be likable, fun, loving and worthy of reciprocating relationships.Even the best "Communities" have bad people. Not saying your bad friend just that a community is people getting into people.

You are an island in a sea of souls. It is up to you to spread love and joy to everyone around you. That is the only way to build a bigger island. Your island will grow into a continent. You will find people only attach themselves to truth and real love. If you present anything less then you may remain an island. What you seek is all around you.

Remember this............... Be real and you will become real. Be to other what you want them to be to you and they will flock to you and you to them. Community takes work not just luck.

YOU SAID THIS

"Having such ephemeral relationships with neighbors, co-workers, and classmates feels a lot like what I would assume it would be like to grow up with a new stepdad every couple years. It just isn't right"

Wow ...............

Don't you understand that all great relationships that we deeply desire start as "ephemeral" ?

I think you very wrong and need to reevaluate how you feel.

What we all want is Love............ That fucking word again right ? LOVE

But it is very true........... The bottom line is Love and loving each other. That is what we are created for. Our creator gives us the freewill to love or not. That is why we sooooo deeply desire love, GO GET YOU SOME COMMUNITY.

You must get out there and build your island

I think I feel what you mean. And I feel the same. My family-situation became a curse, even we live all four in the same city. It is a nightmare to meet with my dad and I try to avoid it, whenever possible. I just did not find the right words to put the situation clear, yet. I feel very bad after having visited him every time. Mom and sister are special chapters each own.
Despite that, I miss a real and large family or a commune. Liveing in the same house, free to go out and return, with the laws of a commune.
I also live again in the same town like my old friends with which I grew up, but after I left town for some years to study and returned, the situation changed. They all got so busy with either their jobs or wives or got sucked down in life. Life changed them, and life changed me. As I was young, I considered my friends my family. As we grow up, we saw, how everybody of us differs and we did not take the value out of that.
Yes, perhaps I will collect some power again to rebuild those bondages, to old friends, to new friends or to my old family.
But the best I can think of in the moment is to build up my own family, my own commune, as fucknuckle said. Be my own love-center and then, it does not matter, if the friends are new or old, and perhaps the families can grow together.
I hate and suffer from that separating shit, even as I know that I am part of cause to it.

communities become virtual and eventually as science, technology and the human mind evolve we will be able to sit in virtual forums where our appearance is our own creation and communicate not only through voice but images feelings and emotions as well.

one of my favorite times was when my inlaws came to live with us (their new condo was 10 months late) for almost a year and my wife's brother wife and child came too for the same summer between foreign professorship postings.

it was too much though for eldest daughter who chose that time to move out.

one of my best parties was when all ages of the neighbourhood dropped by for wife's surprise birthday (from zero to 80)

have to admit I liked it all better than the lady as she is more fastidious.

we used to sit on the porch all summer, but the smiling visitors made her nuts and now our chairs are out back. well until the next thing happens... virtual

I'm a bit reclusive since I lead a basicly quiet contemplative life. Most of my friends are on the internet, and are spread all over the planet. However, when I go out in public, I am not separated from the people I encounter. I chat & joke with people at the grocery store. Yesterday I was at Trader Joes, and the woman behind me in line had a kid about to act up (bored stiff from shopping). So I sang my Jazz version of Itsy Bitsy Spider. The kid calmed down in wonder, & I got a round of applause from everybody in the whole store. I'd say I'm pretty well conected...

I like that jcl... Nice way to stay in touch! And Redgreenvines, i like that situation you described. Family can be a little annoying and overwhelming sometimes, but at least you can all be together!

I don't know how I sounded like I was asking for a hand out or anything. All I'm asking for is what defines us as humans, a family! Through blood and without blood. I have a few friends that I consider like family. It's not like I'm totally isolated or anything. I've got my group-glued-by-love... I just hate all the stangers in the city that's all.

I'm just saying that people used to grow up and die together in the same community. When you feel that kind of group solidarity you treat each other better. You act towards others out of love and concern not just for that individual but for the group as a whole.

In the metropolis there is no such concern. We rob each other, flip each other off in our cars, and generally don't give a shit about 99.9% of the people that we interact with on a daily basis!

I hear what you all are saying, I know that there are still communities to find a place in. I guess I'm thinking of a different definition of a community... one that blends with "family". What's that saying? "It takes a village to raise a child." Fuck, nowadays we barely have one parent for 50% of our families!

It's interesting that you bring up virtual communities. That is a very interesting trend these days, but it can't be healthy for a person like face to face contact is. As mammals we NEED tactile stimulation; we literally go insane with out it. Looking into peoples' eyes, bumping into the fellow behind us, our knees touching as we talk to each other on the couch... these are all small, subtle things that help us maintain our mental health. I love the shroomery to death, but I'd rather be talking to y'all at a gathering, trippin balls and smokin' weed!

I'm going to go check out the Gathering & Travel forum...

Catastrophe does bring us together. Maybe we should be thankful for that....being isolated but safe would be worse than having community and not completely safe.
