the mystical experience is an-overstimulation of the amygdala by dopamine which results in applying deep significance to nearly every thing and/or idea one percieves. it is beautiful biochemistry.

Has this really been scientifically explored enough to make such a bold statement?

And Swami, I'll drudge up a specific experience for you to dissect... I have to find my old journal (it's still packed away somewhere).

Bold, unsubstantiated statements are the hallmark of S&P, er S&M and B&D...

the neuroscience that the statement is based on is legit. it is also the mechanism by which THC is believed to create the mental state it does. (by stimulating the release of or imitation of dopamine). the idea that we are "significance junkies" was proposed by carl sagan. this book by reg morrison further explores the idea. whether there is enough evidence depends on how strongly one wants to hold onto an anthropocentric worldview.

"Significance junkies"? Heh. I like that term.
I don't have a death grip on my interpretations of my experiences. I'm just stating that certain experiences/events in my life have been powerfully synchronous. It could be just a chemical trick...

I'll check that book out, but from that link, it sounds more tangential to this topic. It still looks to be an interesting read.

that book is very much on topic. it has a really good explanation for the origin of the mystical experience as a genetically useful behaviour. this goes to the core question of it's objective existence. I hope you do get to read it. it is very interesting and raises some intriguing questions.
