I doubt "many, many more people are doing psychedelics" today
than in the 90s. Remember the raves of the 90s where thousands
of people every weekend in every major city in the US would
consume MDMA, LSD, and other psychedelics?
The parties of today hardly even a fraction of the numbers and popularity of the ones that went down in the 90s.

And while Ozric and Aphex Twin have both started in the late 80's, their trippier shit started closer to the 00's.
Shpongle albums 1998-2005 (only one album in the late 90s)

Rave scene was big in the 90's, but a bunch of kids taking ecstasy isnt an acid wave. Even looking at my high school drug usage report:

Seniors that have taken LSD or psychedelic mushrooms at least once:
1999: 2.5%
2005: 23%

Anyone who says otherwise is a crocky bitch  :smile: :laugh:

I know nothing about Ozric - whoever that is, but the bulk of Aphex Twin's discography was released in the early 90s. As far as the "tripper shit" being released recently - I guess that is a matter of opinion. His most well-known and acclaimed releases were put out in the 90s.

@bi0: Cool. That was my point of view, and half the bands I listed did make most of their albums in the 2000's. Half of them didnt. So I was half-right. I really dont give a fuck, so please dont give me 'anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool' crap. I just saw a trend recently towards hallucinogen use, something I didnt necessarily see in the 90s. in the 90s I saw kids popping pills, not eating LSD and shrooms.

But as you said, whatever, this isnt even what this thread's about.

Nope. Technically, you're only a 1/4 correct. Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Ozric Tentacles all put out a vast majority of their work in the 1990s. See Ozric Tentacles discography here: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ozric+Tentacles

Well, I saw many more people take MDMA and acid than today - there used to massive amounts of blotter going around back when the Dead still toured...and there was even more ecstacy back when the rave scene was huge. There certainly was alot more psychedelics in distrubition in the 1990s - that is something you cannot argue with. Supply and demand.

Whenever we recuperate from the cataclysmic disasters that will act as a world changing super enema of thought, society, civilization, and technology, we will obviously see a shift back to the basic fundamental roots of music. Acoustic instruments, instruments that have existed since the birth of music, will be the instruments of tomorrow.

Of course the types of music played will depend on what was popular at the time of collapse, as well as who survives and what types of music and instruments were popular and available in their cultures. The chances that most of our current musicians and music teachers will perish is likely, but some would have to survive to rebuild the instruments, and then teach people to play them. In that case these teachers would determine what music would become.

Or if all the teachers craftsmen perished and instruments were found by the survivors, then music would evolve from whatever was popular at the time, whatever was leftover. Maybe it would be like pop/rap on acoustic instruments played by people who are all self taught.

Then again there's always the chance that people will be to busy surviving to bother with music and all will be forgotten about it except that it once existed. And the people will have to create brand new instruments to play brand new types of music with. That would be especially likely if the current trend of electronic music taking over everything continues. With all computers gone, what the hell would people do?

One day, acoustic instruments will once again rule the planet. Thank god because electronic music is destroying music. In 40 years, if there isn't a super enema, then all music will be is a few morons pushing buttons on sequencers. All the soul will be dead and gone. Heh..my roommate has a yamaha motif, and it has this feature that lets you play something really crappy and it will turn into something awesome...it's amazing but scary as well because now anyone can claim to be a musician. Well one day everyone will be playing their shitty bass lines on their keyboard, and the keyboard will make it a good bass line and everyone will forget how to play or come up with actual good bass lines, and everything will sound the same because the computer inside the keyboard created it all. it's like nazi germany god dammit, and i wont stand for it!!

why do you assume that "good" music must be performance-based?

A century ago, photography was not considered an art by critics for the same reasons that you bash electronic music - it had much less physical creation that, say, painting does and was dependent on a machine. Critics claimed the camera did all the work and that it would destroy and cheapen art. A century later, photography is correctly viewed as an important and potent creative avenue.

Just because anyone can pick up a camera and take a picture doesnt mean it is "good" art, just the same as anyone can sequence electronic music doesnt make it quality music.

I think the technology that is utilized by electronic music artists opens up more opportunities to release their creative vision - options that probably wouldnt be available otherwise.

first of all, stop hating on rap....not all of it is the same...and like most music, the stuff they play on MTV isnt where its at... there is some awesome rap out there.....in 40yrs black people will have to invent a new style of music... they invented blues,jazz,rock,r&b, rap , who knows what they'll think of next
