damn, man, all i ever see on here is people talking about phish, tool, or greatfuldead... I mean, greatful dead is fucking awsome, but there are other things out there... Does anyone here other than me listen to shit like Sublime, Radiohead, Widespread Panic, LBDAS, Zepplin, or Dave van Ronk? Of Course you do... (i hope) One question... Why aren't these bands getting the recognition they deserve? And these aren't the only victims, i'm sure you can think of plenty more right off the top of your head... Respond to this message and tell me some of the bands you feel so deeply about, so we can get some more decent music in here, and open ppl up to some new shit... This place's wearin Greatful Dead out... so hop to it negro.... (all genres welcome) ('cept pop)

It wasnt always so. Posts about phish were uncommon at one point. When i first came here I, naturally, had to find out which members were heads. Would it surprise you that there are lots of grateful dead / phish threads on a psychadelic mushroom message board? Anyone is free to submit their own favorite bands obviously. And they do. But I guess the cream rises top the top tho.

i don't think/feel that sheer numbers via mass consensus determines the ultimate value/realness of music(or anything else). By that criteria, Brittany Spears would be great.......not saying she is or isn't, just providing an example

I agree with freak....being played on radio station's and having everyone want you to play on there tour, defiantly has nothing to do with the talent and quality of the music.....that's like saying mcdonald's has good food because over a billion have been served....

"that's like saying mcdonald's has good food because over a billion have been served...."
Excellent analogy. On a side note though,(and this is scary) they're now at 9.9 billion served When they DO hit the 10 bilion plateau, it will be interesting to see what kind of depraved marketing campaign/public promotion gimmick they run to commemorate this unholy event

Sublime, Radiohead and Led Zeppelin not getting enough recognition? Jesus, what planet are you from?
Good bands of course, but they're enormous. They get more than enough recognition, here and elsewhere.

Lately I've been listening to Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, Beck, and Queens of the Stone Age, which could be real or not depending on your definition of 'real'. I think 'Real music' is just a term used by music snobs to make them feel elite and special, simply because of a difference in musical tastes.

you know what adrug, you're exactly right... bravo... I 'Real Music" is a dumb term, and exactly what you said... I never have been accurate with words, but most everyone picked up on what i was asking... And yes, beck fuckin rocks... The new album's good, but still not as good as Odelay. And speaking of Queens of the Stone age, I actually attended One of their singer's wedding... It was a little reception in a small town. The guy's name's Mark Lanegan, perhaps a few of you are familiar with him... He married a really good friend of mine's sister, so i got to hang out with him for a little while... His solo shit's definitely worth a dowload or tweleve... But, yeah, being from such a small hopeless town on the east coast, i felt pretty kickass there...

Actually, in my experience here at the shroomery I've found there to be a lot of interest in all types of music. The dead/phish posts have been a little overwhelming lately but we have had many discussions about all types of music in the past.
IMO I don't think that classical music get the recognition it deserves. There is nothing more beautiful than a great piece of classical, i.e. Bach's 'Brandenburg Concertos' or some Motzart piano or an ever favorite...Beethoven's '9th Symphony'. Or even some 20th century classical like George Gershwin or Gustav Holst.

yeah i like a lot of bands you listed. my additions... pink floyd =) mazzy starr is great chill music rolling stones beatles rage against the machine their newest album "battle of LA" is quite relevent in our current global situation. listen to it if u got it. santana is a great guitarist, sometimes i like to chill to his spanish style. clapton is great and Cream with clapton too counting crows I like this band, or at least their older albums. bush's older stuff is nice. 16 stone 311 has some interesting karmic themes to their music. edit: i'd also like to add Ped's alias "Neurosphere" to my list of good music. he plays piano very well. Order his cd!!

ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND!!!!!!!!!!! I am probably their youngest fan. LOL.
I think that the greatful dead is a great american psychedelic as well as a blues band. Hell Id say that the blues are very psychedelic. I wish I could have experienced the greatful dead lifestyle as chinacat did, I love hearing his stories. I enjoy Dave Matthews Band, but I didnt like his concert that I went to a while back. It wasn't very awe inspiring. I'll probably never attend a phish show because they charge too much fucking money since a lot of rich preppy kids are willing to cough up the big bucks.

I forgot to add YES to my list and I can't believe you've seen them 4 that is fucking nuts! I couldn't imagine seeing any one of those artist words can not describe the joy their albums have brought my life, seeing one of them live would to much. Primus is really the only one I stand a chance of seeing now I wonder if John is doing any touring or work lately?

If you mean John Anderson of Yes, i think he and chris squire/steve howe etc get together and tour occasionally....if you mean John Mclaughlin he appears(usually in a trio format, drums/guitar/bass) at smallish jazz festivals in the summer...
All those bands you have named(with the exception of Primus as they are more recent) came about at an amazing time.....all the infusion of different musical elements, jazz & Rock in the case of Miles and Mahavishnu.... spacey classical motifs in the cases of early(first 6 or 7) King crimson records and Yes......

"Primus is really the only one I stand a chance of seeing now "
Actually, believe it or not, King Crimson is playing on Wednesday (3/19) in Colorado. Then a few days later in Seattle, then San Fran, then LA...yes they are ON TOUR! Shit, here's a ticketbastard link:
http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/735446/
Crimson is one of my favorites also, along with Zappa(especially w/the Mothers), and PRIMUS. To the list of prolific, essential bands of the last 30 years in similar tradition i would add The Police, and Rush. Oh, and Pink Floyd of course. I also groove on Steely Dan, but they're a bit more abstruse.
Damn, id love to see PRIMUS live sometime. But i seriously wonder if Les, Ler and Herb will ever hook up again. I don't like Brain so i don't care if he comes back. Last (and only) time i saw Les was with Oysterhead in Salem, Oregon. That was damn cool. Have you heard anything about the Les Claypool, Danny Carrey, and Adrian Belew project..........OH MAN! I hope i get to hear it!

It was mentioned on toolband.com on Feb. 6. Here's an excerpt:
"...TOOL is still together. Adam just returned from a ten day tour of California, playing second guitar for The Melvins. Danny recently spent some time up north recording with King Crimson's Adrian Belew and Les Claypool of Primus. Maynard is busy cultivating ..."
I've heard about in some other places. I guess they layed down some tracks in January or something. Pretty damn cool, huh? Who knows if we will ever hear this. We can only hope....

sorry, its jsut thatt modest mouse is really bad. Very cheesy lyrics, and they can barely play their instrements. Its ok to like them, as long as you know their stupid. I mean I like some stupid stuff too.
And i don't mind modest mouse, its jsut that i would never call them "amazing"

cheesy? as in repetitive and catchy? I have no idea where you would even come up with that. Please tell me the modest mouse songs you've heard. none of their songs even sound the same. every song of their is an abstract piece of genius. here are some to d/l..

I forgot King Crimson was still touring I actually had a chance to head out and see them in Colorado but the show was sold out and I couldn't find a ticket. They are opening for a wanker band also and I didn't want to travel that far to see a half hour set(not sure what they would do?) cause my friends are going to all 3 nights at the filmore for string cheese. WTF is King Crimson doing opening for the ding cheese?

I remember mentioning Rufus Wainwright to a guy on the Dextroverse, and he said he would check him out if I checked out Modest Mouse. I never got around to it.
Rufus Wainwright is some hardcore crazy ass shit. I love him. Just don't beat me up when you find out just how hardcore he is ... (Assuming you don't know already, and haven't already beat me up.)
hmm, I should dig Poses up. I haven't listened to it in a long time.

Geddy Lee's voice was always the biggest obstacle in my enjoying Rush as well, although i admit i also find Alex Lifeson's guitar playing totally devoid of passion(even if still very good technically)....and i say this as someone who went to a highschool within a few miles of the one that they attended(not that this should be a factor, just reporting here)

I don't like Rush.
I don't care how "good" they are, they annoy the fucking fuck out of me. They were just on the radio -can't remember what song- so I changed it. It made me want to run people over, and not in a good, Cradle of Filth-ish, way.

FreakQLibrium lists:
Frank Zappa King Crimson Miles Davis Mahavishnu Orchestra Yes
Ah! So many excellent concerts in the early Seventies. I have seen all of those and many more. I saw Yes for the first time when they had just released their first album. It was a three band bill -- Yes, Black Sabbath, and Bloodrock, and believe it or not the top billing was Bloodrock! Yes opened, and they just blew everyone away. Neither I nor any of my friends had ever heard their stuff at the time -- we went because of Black Sabbath. Anyway, the general consensus was that Yes stole the show BIGTIME, Black Sabbath was pretty good, and Bloodrock sucked ass. The whole stadium started emptying out two songs into Bloodrock's set.
I have seen a total of four Yes concerts, the most recently December of 2002 at the Corel Center in Ottawa (I was visiting my parents for a month) with ALL the original crew including Rick Wakeman! It was great, but there were only a few thousand there. What a shame.
I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra on the "Birds of Fire" tour, and then later a concert with John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana. Now THAT was an awesome show for guitar afficianados.
I saw King Crimson twice -- their "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" tour was quite possibly one of the most wonderful shows I have ever seen, and I have seen dozens of great bands.
Saw Zappa just once -- it was right after "Overnight Sensation" and "Apostrophe" had been released. Amazing show -- almost three hours of incredible musicianship from Ainsley Dunbar, Jean Luc Ponty, Napolean Murphy Brock, Ruth and Ian Underwood, and a few others. Zappa himself in his biography says that the crew he had on that tour was his favorite, and I can see why. Incredible amount of talent onstage at once.
As a sidenote, the first time I saw Supertramp was immediately after the release of Crime of the Century, and was at the Ottawa High School of Commerce gymnasium. It cost $2.00 Canadian, and there weren't more than 500 people there. It was way better than other concerts I saw for a lot more money.
Ah... the early Seventies!
/me tears up at the memories

. It was a three band bill -- Yes, Black Sabbath, and Bloodrock, and believe it or not the top billing was Bloodrock!"
i actually had the 1st Bloodrock album if you can believe that. It was realeased maybe half a year B4 the first sabbath. Yes didn't really recieve much in the way of public acclaim til their third album and the regular airplay of "yours is no disgrace" as well as the addition of Steve Howe. i saw J.Geils and Yes together halloween eve 72...... drug of choice: spaceshit* acid(blotter) lmao! i meant spaceSHIP!
I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra on the "Birds of Fire" tour, and then later a concert with John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana. Now THAT was an awesome show for guitar afficianados.
i saw mahavishnu(6X in total) open for zappa on the overnite sensation tour in toronto in march of 73, and i was also fortunate enough to catch the santana/mclaughlin show at maple leaf gardens in sept of 73( the place was filled to MAYBE one quarter capacity). I wasn't crazy about the love devotion and surrender studio album but the live show kicked major league ass! nly drug i could get, weed
I saw King Crimson twice -- their "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" tour was quite possibly one of the most wonderful shows I have ever seen,"
i saw king crimson on their "Red" tour in june 74(they did quite a bit of lark's tongue as well).......drug of choice: orange double barrel
with jean luc ponty it was almost incestuous lol, i had seen him with zappa earlier and then we drove down to buffalo to catch the first ever(and only, i think) live performance(feb 74) of the apocalypse album directed by well know pot head michael tilson thomas abd featuring a completely new personal......including ponty of course.....i was so high on acid, and this WAS a charity event to support the buffalo philharmonic so there were WAY more people(tuxedos etc) there for the BPH that there were for Mclaughlin, that i kept asking my friend "why are we HERE again?" seriously i was THAT fucked up! lol good times man......

YES!!!! Orange Double Barrel -- that stuff was amazing. I too had a headful of ODB for the "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" show. Bill Bruford looked like a wizened little troll scurrying around his complex percussion setup, tinkling and twinkling various gongs and chimes with frenetic energy.
Other concerts I saw under the influence of ODB (in no particular order) -- Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull (Thick as a Brick tour), Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon tour), The Who, Genesis (Selling England by the Pound tour), and... ummm... I know there's more, but I forget now.
Orange Double Barrel was what all acid SHOULD be!
Ooops... guess I'm way off topic now. But I tend to wax rhapsodic about ODB. Please excuse my fond reminiscence.

-------------------- < I have logged in this once so that I can set the "last seen" feature up. let the faggots flow forth into OTD and have it. Its funny how they all grew nuts after I left. I'm not here, I'm not reading, but I urge you all to keep melting down over me. I know, I hurt alot of people, and they deserved it. epic win for me, epic fail for you. ythan, you rock dude. i feel that my time at the shroomery was very positive and enjoyable, but this site is no longer for me. im not mad or upset or disappointed, i just want no part in a pg rated faggot festival. <

I'm surprised no one mentioned Eminem (gets read to dive for cover from the rap-haters). Alot of people seem to hate rap, and I agree alot of it sucks terribly. But then, thats with most any form of art, theres alot of crap, and something good every now and then.
Also, I love Tool, Floyd, Petty, George Clinton, CSNY, and plenty of others I can't remember.
