Slow colonization
    #451660 - 11/08/01 02:21 PM (15 years, 29 days ago)

originally I thought because the print I had was like 3 or 4 years old that the slow colonization was just because of the age. Well I still believe that..but now that they are colonized about the size of a silver dollar (only at one point per jar) they are not picking up any speed.. I would think that once they get going they would grow like normal..they look very healthy and rhizomorphic or what not. I think maybe my problem now is that its been 3 weeks and my jars look like they could possibly be getting dry. How would I know if the jars are dry if if they are what would I do?
Also I wanted to mention that a little tiny bit of mycelium is growing up the glass near the top..its not a lot but I figured there must be a reason for this

Dry substrate is the # 1 cause of slow/halted colonization.

look to see if there is any h2o build up on the sides of the jar or in it around the bottom. if so co2 buildup might be the prob. just loosen the lids a little so it can have some air extange. if in a week or two they stop growing or turn blueish you might try injecting some bottled h2o using the same syringe that you used to inject the spores in. this time shake the hell out of the syringe .
ps. make sure the nedle is steralized with a flame then a napkin with some alcohol on it.

Hmmm,

I think maybe you need to keep the jars over at my house...
They might colonize better there!!! :0)

now am i going to want to put water in where the mycelium is or in other spots?
or just near the mycelium but not directly next to or on it?
im almost absolutely sure my jars are just dried out
and im almost pretty sure its not c02
just because Ive opened most of them (my house must have like no contams because they still arent contaminated)

i opened 1 because i thought there was no growth but it turned out it was just growing only on the top (because I innoculated near the top) and the other one i opened to cut out a furry mold contam..which I cut out successfully...
it never touched my mycelium and never returned
So yeah... and another jar i opened on accident..because I just meant to take the ring off so i could see if there was growth but i accidently broke the rubber seal on the lid part
yeah
so im lame
but fortunately there is no contams and its been like a week since any were opened and the mycelium has grown a little just very slowely and yeah

Sterile water, sterile syringe. Inject past the dry verm layer. The water will spread out evenly.
