slow colonizing
    #472538 - 11/28/01 03:55 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

Hello everyone, my Nemisis Austin powers is trying to colonize some jars of finch seed, that has been pressure cooked, cooled then innoculated using the oven tek.

Now he let it go for a week, and had a couple of BIG white colonized spots, so he desided to shake the jar up to spread things around evenly. Well not he has a couple of spots on the bottom of the jar, and maybe some here and there, but it has not continued to take off like the start (ie..Big white spots all over the grain)
He has them in a dark warm place (about 80deg)
in sealed jars (lid on backwards, on tight)
temp is reg. by warm water (container floating on warm water in another container)

it has been over a month now, and since he shook it up hardly any differance that he can see. ( he would have thought that the grain would be completly WHITE with colonization by now)???

any ideas??

there is no contaoms that he can see, he sprays the entire jars with LYSOL before i handle them.. is that a problem??

should he crack the jars to give it air??

any ideas would help him out soo much... He wants to case soon! (x-mas is almost here!)

Yes, they need air.

so should he leave the lids loose, OR just crack the lids for a second to let some new air in, and then re close (tighten?)

Just a shamless bump... Austin powers needs to know if he should leave the lids on loosly to let air in, or just crack them open for a second or two, to let air in, once a week??

any ideas?

I think Feelingroovy is right - I've heard that if the jars are shaken too much, then the little clumps of mycelium don't have time to reform themselves and colonization can actually take longer. Have patience, my friend - I'm sure it'll all work out in the end! ;)

Another piece of information from my own experiences (errr, not MY experiences) is that the jars actually colonize faster if you leave them in the light a little bit. Not a lot of light, but just out in the open part of a house kind of light. I have done any direct tests with this yet, but it seems that I cut more than a week or two off the colonzation time from when the jars where kept pretty much in the dark.

PS: Number 2 is working for Powers. Give me Starbucks to piss him off.

You do not need to see contams in order to have them I have recently learned. How does it smell. If it's like stinky feet or a sickly, sweet, amonia type smell it is bacteria and they need to DIE, DIE, DIE!!

Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have.
