Quick vs. slow colonization mystery

Ok get this, my friend inoculated 5 jars of rye, all prepared in the same fashion, and all inoculated at the same time and with the same amount of fluid with a syringe of EQ. The only thing is he ran out of room in his 14 gallon Rubbermaid tub so he had to create a new one but only had a 10 gallon one to use. In the 14 gallon Rubbermaid tub he completely covered the bottom with damp perilite and in the 10 gallon one he just used 2 jars with damp perilite in them (cause he ran out of perilite and didn?t feel like buying more so he had to conserve). Now here is the kicker, the 3 jars that he put in the 10 gallon tub are now almost completely colonized while the ones in the 14 gallon are just now starting to colonize. Both tubs were keep in the same closest, the only difference was the 10 gallon was on a shelf which was like 5 feet off the ground. Also the 14 gallon Rubbermaid has some other jars in there colonizing as well besides the 2 EQ jars. Also he never fanned the tubs, just stuck the jars in there and closed the lid (he didn?t think it would be necessary to fan) Why would there be such a dramatic difference in the colonization speed? The only things he could think of was possibly an O2 difference or maybe humidity, but it didn't seem to him that they should be that different between the two tubs. Anyone have any idea why there would be such a dramatic difference in colonization time?

Why are you incubating your jars in rubbermades with perlite?

to help prevent the jars from drying out? i see they are covered with filters. perhaps there is nothing else but filter. if there is nothing but filter the jars may lose lots of moisture during incubation. if the jars are enclosed in a container with wet perlite increasing humidity, maybe they won't dry out so fast. a guess.

Yeah its just a filter disk and nothing else. and yup thats why they are in there with peritlite, to prevent them from drying out too much. My friend remembers reading some where at some point that the rye would dry out without being placed in a humid environment. But his never really experimented with this... Think the perilite is unnecessary?

just a light misting every now and then is enough, but if you wanna use perlite i guess it works too

perlite goes good with the filter discs

even check out the micronmagick place they use perlite in their terranium too got the concept from there

yeah i know why he uses the perlite, but im more curious why there would be such a dramtic difference in colonization time between the two tubs. Anyhow have any idea?

are the two tubs in two different locations? it appears one has perlite in it and one doesnt, if all the jars appear the same from the two tubs i'm guessing its has to do with heat. put some heat in the perlite tub and ittl speed them way up

well if the 10 gal one is 5 ft above the ground that could account for several degrees of temperature difference. This would especially be true in some closets. The gremlins in my house have measured up to a 8 degree (Fahrenheit) temp difference in a 6.5 ft high closet. That type of temperature stratification would easily account for the varying results in colonisation time.
