What's the name of this Shroom...Russian->English
    #438320 - 10/27/01 03:26 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

All my life i've enjoyed this wonderful tasting mushroom. I come from a Russian background, and that's where I originally ate it. I know of only one place in the US where you can buy them, and that place is in Brooklyn called Brighton Beach where the mushrooms go around $15-$20/pound.

Now I am just wondering what could be the name of this mushroom in english. In russian it's called "LESICHKI"
and sounds like that "LE-SEE-CH-KEE"

Anyway, I hope someone can help me out with this I'd love to eat some of these they are delicious!

If you give a description of the mushroom, we could probably be of better help...

I think you mean chanterelle, Cantharellus cibarius.

Wow, Anno, you definetly are the man.

After seeing your posts all over the place, and your amazing shroom crops, I bow down to your mushroom supremacy.

These DO in fact look like the ones I LOVE to eat... how hard is it to grow these puppies... is it possible to get a spore/print/etc of these some how in the US?

Also, I know you're the master of growing, so I want to ask you, is using Sphagnum Peat moss ok? Also, I am thinking about substituting Oyster Shells with crushed corals, is this a good idea? And as for the "lime" what exactly do I need to get and where can I find it?

Thanks a lot in advance!!!!! And thanks a LOT for identifying LESICHKI!!! you rock!!!

Uh, sorry to tell you, but they cant be cultivated! Well, you could innoculate tree roots.. but it would take around 20 years. I could give you a spore print, but considering that you cant do anything with it, i won't. They are sold in supermarkets in the US ( dry only )... In Europe though, well, you can get baskets of em in many countries, mostly imported from Poland

Wow... 20 years to grow from innoculated tree roots... pretty intense... so I can't use a simple casing tek on them? :)

And as for finding them in the US, yeah, only in brooklyn have I found fresh ones for sale, they are like the best tasting mushrooms i've ever had :)

In a russian store here , I've found them canned, thats about it...

Just a general question... why can some mushrooms be easily cultivated at home, while others can't at all?

Some mushrooms live in symbiosis with trees(on the roots of them).
These species are called mycorhyza species. Among them chanterelles, truffels and boletes. These species can?t be cultivated indoors, since they require the host tree.
Other species, that simply grow on dead wood or other dead substances can be grown.

Actually, the first chantrelle produced in cultivation came from a pretty young pine seedling(I think it was a year old). It was fruited in a greenhouse. If you plant a seedling of the right species of tree near a colony of chantrelles and get lucky, you can transplant that seedling in your backyard and produce chantrelles outdoors, provided you have the right conditions.
People claim that Matsutakes (Tricholoma magnivelare) take at least twenty years to fruit because all fruit bodies observed in the wild are on hosts that are at least 20 years old. This rule of thumb does not apply to all mycorrhizal mushrooms.

Hey Anno, I have a collectoin of Bonsai trees, if you have the right kind of host tree in bonsai form, do you think it would be possible to cultivate some of these mushrooms indoors? If so, what would I need to do to accomplish it.

Hmm. that?s an interesting thought. There are several sites on the net that present the trials of universities and other scientific endevours to cultivate them indoors. So far with no real success.

Are you sure that these are called "LESICHKI" in russian?
It isn't a long time ago that I went hunting with a russian girl. And she told me about the "LESICHKI", and that the name came from LIZA (fox) because of their red hat. It turn out to be one of the Boletus, called "Rotkappe" in german, the one that has a red hat and grows under Birch-Trees.

Elektrolurch

btw: The ones you ate are really good. They are rel. easy to buy here in Germany. They get collected in Poland. Only one group of scientist got to cultivate this mushroom, but it is very difficult and tideous, and therefore not worth.

Boletus edulis[/i[, the King Bolete, also known as Cep, Steinpilz, Porcini and many other names is one of the most prized and sought after mushrooms in Europe. Sounds like it!

I found once a precious exemplar of B. edulis, but I didn't mean that one. I meant Leccinum versipelle or Leccinum aurantiacum. Both also good edible mushrooms.

They are called "LISICHKA" in slovenian, so I?m pretty sure "LESICHKI" is what?s it?s called in russian, since these are both slavic languages.

Hmm, I don?t know what do you want to argue about.

jokerGD asked a question, I answered it, he said my guess was right.

In fact,
this post (below) says Eric Durell, a swedish scientist, has managed to create cantarelli fruit.

Why it is so difficult to cultivate, in more detail, is that theese muchsoom can't use cellulose as a carbohydrate source; but instead uses small carbohydrates from the tree's photosynthesia.

Anyway, if you know swedish, here it is:
