I get assloads of boletes out in the woods behind my house in the summertime.

I have yet to get them ID'd yet though. Most boletes are not edible.

that's a good question. i'm sure a decent field guide could tell you. i find them situated right between a large pine and a large oak tree in my backyard (so I don't know which it likes). the area is very mossy and somewhat rocky. they only pop up maybe 5 at a time. certainly enough to get a print/clone.

btw, i mostly find boletes in thick, healthy grass, and also in pine mulch beds.

IINM, I have a chanterelle print from about June of last year. I'll be sure to take more this year.

Cloning can be quite difficult also since there are
bacteria in the fruit bodies of Cantharellus cibarius..

My 'difficult' project this year is to finish my work on Boletus parasiticus, one of the few, if not the only, Bolete that fruits without a mycorrhizal association.  I already have a robust culture (P1) stored.  Now all I need is to start a culture of Scleroderma citrinum and get to work.  lol

Some of you really amaze me with your awesome projects!

I'd put this one also into that difficult category (without quotation marks)...

A sort of "semi-cultivation" methods for bolete from a novel
by Vladimir Soloukhin ("Third Hunt" in English ???)
A good book to get you to the  hunting mood!

Of course you must be very lucky to succeed with these methods...

Translated with SYSTRAN from "Tret'ya ohota":
http://lib.ru/lat/PROZA/SOLOUHIN/
(Those who understand Russian can find this piece of text easily
by searching "1903"... In Finnish translation it's on page 111.)

You'll get the picture despite the translation errors ..

(A question about breeding of fungi nevertheless remains obscure.
Aksakov it recalls, that it vysypal each time of trimming saffron
milk-caps under the old fir tree and finally under the fir tree of
nachali diluted saffron milk-caps. In the table calendar in 1903, very
instructive in every respect, as to me it prompts some of the readers,
it is indicated that edible boletus possible it reared on the beds.
Ripe edible boletus took for this, assumed into the bucket with the
water and after several days poured on by this water of bed. And
edible boletus will grow supposedly.

Another reader of prislal to me cut from the newspaper "red spark",
which it is left in the city Of borovichi of Novgorod region. Article
is signed by M. By i. Lavrentyev, by the master of green building and
horticulture from the state farm "red frontier-guard" of the Pskov
province. Is called article "as 4 to vyrashchivayu fungi". Here is
this small article from the word to the word. "Predstav'te to itself,
that in your garden or on the vegetable-garden grow such valuable
fungi, as white and saffron milk-caps!.. Indeed this is completely
possible, it costs it only created the neobkhodimye conditions for
their growth. Edible boletus (borovik) is spread both in the conifers
and in the deciduous forests. It is loved dry bright places; therefore
it possible separated in the aisles of garden and in the
vegetable-garden.
In 1957 near the house of 4 zalozhil the section with an area of 12
sq. meters for landing of edible boletus. On this area of 4 ulozhil
fresh horse manure by layer 12
- 15 cm. then of prigotovil the mixture, which consists of 4 parts of
the turf earth, 3 parts of rotten leaves, 2 parts of the rotten tree
and 1 part of the clay (cannot used only sheet and stem or the root of
willow, since they were contained tanning substances). After thorough
reblading this mixture is plotted to the manure. Before the landing
the mixture is sealed well.
There are several methods of fitting the fungi. In one case are taken
in the scaffolding the fungi with the part of the earth, on which they
proizrastali, and the mycelium perenosyatsya into the holes. Sowing is
covered by rotted leaves by layer 2 cm. in 35 days tyuey
poyavlyayutsya the embryos of fungi. Then leaves must it carefully
removed if it stands dry weather - it follows it produced the died
irrigation by the heated water. Time of sowing - second-half of July.
Harvest possible was assembled at the end of August. With this method
of fitting the mushroom spawn of 4 sobiral on 27 edible boletus with 1
square meter.
The second method is of the sowing disputes. For this of 4 bral the
cap of the matured fungus, klal by lower part to the sheet of clean
paper, their pomeshchal on the window-sill. In twenty-four hours on
the paper it poyavlyalas' the finest brown pollen, disputes. Their 4
carefully perenosil on area. Simultaneously ispytyval and the
different version of this method. It zaklyuchalsya in the fact that
two caps of old flabby fungus opuskalis' into the garden watering can
with the water. Through several days the fungus of rastvoryalsya, and
by this water 4 moderately polival mushroom spawn. By such method of
dostigalsya uniform sowing. The shoots of fungi okazalis' friendly,
flat. From one square meter. 4 sobral on 57 edible boletus of the
first type.
The prepared area- mushroom spawn is suitable to the use several
years. The yearly sowing of the spores in the wet saw it gives the
abundant harvest of fungi. In an approximately the same manner
kul'tiviruyutsya saffron milk-caps. In the period of fungus season it
is gathered the mycelium of fungus in that part of the earth, on which
it proizrastal. After the removal of rubbish of the mycelium it is
plotted in the box and it is stored in the dry cool accomodation until
the spring, when is produced sowing into the soil as edible boletus
".)
