Chanterelles and cultivating them?
    #2241390 - 01/14/04 11:02 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I have read that the Chanterelles can not be cutivated. I have a LARGE patch of them ever august in my woods behind my house. 6lb's last year . Does anyone know why you cant cultivate them. They dont have a standard cap like most mushies so im assuming its hard to get spores from them but could one try and clone them to agar or liquid and grow them out that way?. I am going to try it this fall but if anyone knows for sure, it would be helpful.

Thanks
Max

Chanterelles do a symbioses with trees. So it's very hard to cultivate them indoors :frown:
Do search in the internet. There are a lot of description on why it is difficult to grow chanterelles, truffles and other edibles.

it's because, as ragadinks said, chanterelles are symbiotic with trees.. they HAVE been cultivated indoors though- once . It was a highly trained group of scientists who manipulated microbial conditions and managed to grow one ( or was it 2-3 ) piddly-looking chanterelles. ( alot of the time that doesn't show up from a google search..

THIS IS THE REAL DEAL, WITH PHOTOS...

also, the relationship between a fungal symbiont and it's host is called
mycorhizal .
both organisms benefit in many tangible ways from the exchange of sugars, micronutrients, water....etc.
the fungi may protect the tree/plant/shrub from parasites, extend the root system, provide minerals from decaying substrates...

mycorhizae
this is not the only documented fruiting of chanterelles from pots...but the best site for our purposes. photo and everything.
