Diarrhea from Chanterelles?
    #1812439 - 08/14/03 05:52 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

hi.

last night i cooked up a good bunch of chanterelles and ate them with some pasta.  a few hours later, i got diarrhea.

it came at a really bad time, too!

it wasn't explosive or anything; it just kinda felt like some water poured outa my butt.

has anyone else experience this after eating chanterelles???

Were they picked from the wild, if so they may have been the look alike Jack-o-lanterns.

they were picked from the wild, but toxicman confirmed that they were in fact edible chanterelles for me in the hunting forum. i have had normal bowel movements since last night.

Mushrooms have a lot of fiber.  If it was a shock to your system [the fiber], that would explain being able to shit through a screen door

First, it's possible that you are one of the rare people who get sick when they eat chanterelles. Fortunately, that's unlikely. But if you get sick the next time you eat them, you might want to try eating a very small amount to see if they're the cause.

Second, how much did you eat? Overeating mushrooms is one of the more common causes of problems. Most of the substance of a mushroom is indigestable. There are even a few cases on record of people overeating so badly that it caused an intestinal blockage (that can't be good).

Third, it could be a mild poisoning from something (anything, including the mushrooms) that had spoiled a little.

And, of course, you cuold just have happened to start coming down with something coincidentally about when you ate the chanterelles.

The easiest way to find out if the chanterelles are the cause is to eat a bit more (assuming you didn't finish 'em off).

Hope you don't get sick some more. Did they at least taste good?

Happy mushrooming!

I have eaten chanterelles that I have picked twice, and both times ended up with some stomach discomfort. It never developed into anything more than just a little discomfort, but it was noticeable none the less.

You may be one of those unfortunate few who can't eat them without feeling ill.

I knew a guy who got sick if he ate Boletus edulis. I hear that sensitivity to Agaricus species is actually pretty common, relatively speaking.

Sensitivity to mushrooms tends to go by genus. So if you're sensitive to Cantharellus species, it should have no effect on whether you can eat mushrooms from other genera.

Happy mushrooming!
