not true, i knew a couple who made a lot of homeade alcoholic drinks using natural herbs and grain. They made their absinthe taste like black licorice, it was still really strong and you needed to chase it with some water, but it didnt have the ass taste of normal absinthe. He also made this drink called aphrodites period, tasted exactly like hot damn. Good stuff

So do those pre-made ones have the hallucenogenic stuff in them? I heard when they're pre-made they aren't allowed to put certain necessary ingredients in?
I tried to make homemade absinthe. I can barely put into words how wretched it tasted.

There's a lot of myth out there. Based on everything I've read, absinthe was never hallucinogenic. It's active ingredient (beyond the average 68% alcohol!!) is thujone, derived from the wormwood. I don't know all the chemistry involved, except to say that while thujone is a toxin, there's nothing to indicate that it's hallucinogenic... That said, a few good glasses of absinthe will leave you with a feeling unlike other drinks. You're drunk, but not in a sluggish, ugly way. You feel light and talkative. That's about it really. And, with enough sugar, it can taste pretty damn good. At least some of this is simply due to the fact that you're ingesting so much water along with the alcohol.
The EU currently holds thujone levels to 10 mg/l. This goes back to the widespread belief that excessive amounts of thujone, as was popular in the 19th century brands, causes madness. However, there doesn't seem to really be any scientific basis for this. Most likely, those that suffered brain damage from the drink, did so because they bought really shitty products made through cheap distillation and added toxins, such as methanol. From what I hear, there are still old vintage bottles of Pernod available that run over a grand a piece. These have thujone levels up around 25 mg/l. People drink them without any ill effects.... The US's 'it's legal to own, but not to sell' policy makes even less sense.

absinthe isnt really hallucinigenic unless you binge drink. but then that would apply to all alchohol
