I am one of the few who likes a fine absinthe neat.

But often, I just pour some in a small glass with an ice cube and a touch of sugar. The louche from melting ice is very trippy.

So, I drink my absinthe at about a 1 to 1 water to spirit ratio. That said, I do envoy it prepared traditionally too, it brings out the subtleties of this complex drink.

Absinthe is the best!  Licorice has got to be one of my favorite flavors of all time, and it's so much fun to pour the water through the sugar, and watch the sugar melting as the clear absinthe turns cloudy and white.  But unfortunately watching the cloudy swirls is the most psychedelia you're going to get out of the experience.  Just a better tastier Jager.  Maybe a hint of placebo on top.

I just love the alcohol sucking out all the air from your lungs haha... absinthe is fun to drink even though it's no different to any other alcoholic drink... just like tequila

Really, go for something yellow.

I am not saying this is the BEST stuff, but green or blue may be artificial. Some of the best stuff is green. But yellow never tastes fake IME (although some are much better than others). Darker colors may be bullshit.

I am not a fennel fan in absinthe (I like it, but it is an overwhelming flavor unless used in moderation, and too much can make anything taste like cheap, black licorice... absinthe is expinsive. If I want Jäger, I'll buy it). Absinthes which are higher in anise content are my favorites.

This comes down to personal tastes. But again, there are many cheap, licorice-flavored, liquors. If you are paying for absinthe, you may want a better balance of herbal flavors.

Yellow to start. Then you will know what to look for in the green.

Absinthe in the USA can be a fickle thing. Most of it is bullshit. Even the European stuff. You need to get a feel for it.

I would suggest brands but there are SO many, and only a few are available in any region. Every place has access to good (if not great) absinthe. But your brands may or may not be my brands.

I will say, I started my absinthe love affair with Versinthe, from France. That is legit shit. I'd tried other brands before but THAT was the one.

I pitty the fools who only know bad absinthe.

Absinthe is like, the micro-brewed-beer of liquor. Each is unique. Many suck. A few are truly great.

A great absinthe is like a great scotch. It costs a pretty penny but it's uniqueness and complexities make it worthwhile. Especially if you don't down a fifth per night...

A good bottle of absinthe is worth enjoying for many weeks.
