Actually, they tested modern Absinthes being produced today here in the US, in Switzerland, and France, and they were found to contain about the same levels of Thujone as popular pre-ban era Absinthes, despite today's regulations on Thujone levels. Many of them follow recipes of the era to the letter, and even use the same antique copper alembic stills. Not much difference at all.

Do you know how much thujone are in it?

You're not going to trip off 300ml of absinthe... you're just going to get very drunk. My theory is that back then people drank absinthe with a shitload of thujone and after awhile awhile it make then trip(crazy).

Wow, quite a lot of replied were made before I had the time to type this...

You can try the sugar, or try adding a bit more water, but if you don't like the taste of anise then there's no hope.

I'm not one for drinking it in cocktails, but I like a Death in the Afternoon now & again. It was devised by Ernest Hemingway. :grin:

Just buy a bottle of Spanish Cava, get it nice and cold and pour it into a shot of absinthe. You might like this drink better with the Cava to balance it out and give it some fizz.

My mistake, misread your post a bit. Yeah, the politics behind the ban is one thing, but I still think there's something to be said about Absinthe's effect beyond that of alcohol. Some of it can be chalked up to the herbs used embellishing the drunk on an ambient level. The rest is as rife with magic as anyone has ever made it out to be, and I can understand the source of all that romanticism from all of the old painters and poets. It's just something you come to discover the more you drink it.

I've never personally imbibed the stuff so I can't make too much of a judgment as to its effects beyond the alcohol content. I don't doubt that the experience is unique, whether the differences are real or perceived. Just trying to combat the whole "absinthe is some trippy shit MAAAN" mythology.

It isn't that bad, honestly. It's like a green cocktail of pyschadelia. It may be trying too hard, but I'm no one to judge it. It's easy to get used too. But I would strongly suggest against drinking it habitually. The alcohol in it doesn't feel like it's doing any good to me. It just gets me drunk, and the other stuff. well, I'll just leave it at that.

It's not bad. It would be the perfect beverage with some shrooms. I would gladly take a night off with some amanitas and a glass of absinthe. But I would have to be extremely extremely careful. I'm sure everyone else on this forum will have something to say about that, but as for now, I don't.

It has not been banned, it's alcohol with herbs. They banned thujone, which is found in the herbs. They removed/isolated it apparently. Idk why.

It can only have so much thujone..10ppm > ...Some people say its the anise that does it....Anethole :cool:

I have noticed a cumulative effect with Absinthe where the drunk becomes a more and more surreal/dream-like experience the more frequently I drink it.

Also drank quite a few glasses the last time I ate mushrooms and they were some of the best glasses of Absinthe I'd ever had. They compliment each other very well.

Like everyone else said, absinthe doesnt make you trip. When i first saw Eurotrip when i was a teenager i couldnt wait to get my hands on a bottle, thinking id see little green fairies. But the stuffs just really high proof anise flavored liquor.

It got me drunk enough to order papa johns. That's a trip in itself.

It's not bad stuff, but I advise anyone who drinks it to be careful.

I bought 3 100ml bottles and it ended up costing me like $30. I have only drank 1 1/2 so far, but I am fairly drunk. I have yet to see 'any' and I repeat 'any' green fairies. They just aren't awake I suppose.

On a seperate note, I do know that thujone can be acquired. I'm just way too lazy to get it.

And I only have one bottle left. Hopefully I will find it in the morning.

I had a crazy experience though, I think I heard ghosts in my attic or something. I'm not quite sure, whatever they were, they were really mad at me. They said something like "dammit".

I can't stand that kind of stuff.

This is exactly how you prepare a glass of Absinthe:

bonus points if you can do it with a beautiful Franch accent.

If you want to experience REAL Absinthe at the best price/quality ratio, I can utterly recommend

Take this from an Absintheur utterly disgusted with 90% of whats on the market.

If you want the hard facts about water: add 3-5 ounces of fridge temperature water to 1 ounce of Absinthe. Think of Absinthe as lemonade syrup: It is meant to be diluted, the flavors in it are not intended to be drank neat. Its not like whiskey thats meant to be drank neat unless you cant handle the strength,its a drink exclusively intended for diluting.

That's what I got, used about 3 teaspoons of sugar and drank 2 of them. Heard some ghosts and got a hangover. Not to bad all in all.

Haven't seen this particular Duplais, and I really like the label art. I've drank my fair share of Duplais Verte, though, and it's easily among the best Absinthe. My personal favorite is Vieux Pontarlier, from Pontarlier, France.

Some others high in the running are actually US-made Absinthes.

1. Pacifique Verte : Distilled in Washington, accurate presentation of a 19th Century French Absinthe, very nice color/louche. About $65.

2. Vieux Carre : Distilled in Pennsylvania and has a more extensive herbal profile than most 'true' Absinthes. The color falls short for me, being a murky brown in the glass and the louche is lousy. The bottle is beautiful but completely transparent, not UV protective, which doesn't help it's color, as it degrades further in the bottle if exposed to light. Being from PA, though, it's easy to find this in the local state stores, and it's a much better alternative than Lucid or Kubler, which are the only other two they offer. $55

Sorry, that stuff is swill. Last I checked, it didn't even contain thujone.

Absinthe is an odd drink and it has a history filled with misinformation.

It was banned for the wrong reasons.

A feature of good absinthe, is how it turns cloudy when water is added. This is known as louche.

To mimic this louhe, cheaper absinthes began adding poisonous heavy metals to their recipes.

The metals caused many people to act mad, go insane, see things that were not there, get sick, and die.

Then absinthe was almost globally banned.

Only recently have historians and distillers been able to bring traditional absinthe back (well, that and the advent of the EU, which is a different story).

Absinthe is a trendy drink right now, and many sell their version of it. Most versions are awful, candy flavored swill. The good stuff is in a league of its own. It can be very costly looking for a good brand. For starters, look for something that is more yellow than green (blame Moulin Rouge for the green absinthe craze). Yellow absinthes tend to be herbal in flavor where as green or god forbid l, blue ones will taste like candy. Since the worst absinthes cost nearly the same as the best ones, you owe it to yourself to drink the good stuff.

As for thujone. I believe it does have an effect. Yet it is mild.

I know an absinthe buzz like I know a vodka, rum or beer buzz. It is unique, but it is clearly alcohol that runs the show.

This is the stuff I have,

Duplais Swiss Absinthe Verte

I think it is fairly representative of a traditional absinthe, but I don't know since its all I've had.

I like it once in a while as a novelty. I have a spoon, but I find it hard to slowly drip water over it without an apparatus. I manage though, I like to do it the 'right' way. I usually end up tossing an ice cube in it at the end though, for some diluted and cooler drink.

Ill take a fine Tequila or Mezcal over Absinthe any day. :wexican:
