erm, they didn't legalize it, there's just a brand called "lucid" out.
go to Lucid's Website... It says it meets US laws for the amount of wormwood in it, and that samples of classical absinthe show it didn't have a high concentration of wormwood.

weed puts holes in your brain and kills probably around 100k people a year. Now alcohol is totally harmless and kills zero.

It was competing with the Wine industry in France. Once they paid some pseudo-scientist to do a bogus animal study that concluded that thujone was hallucinogenic - which it's not. And bad math estimated that absinthe contained a significant amount of thujone - which it doesn't. America followed suit, because we love banning shit.

This article pretty much covers it. I think I'll stick to beer and bourbon personally. I think the mystique of Absinthe has given rise to the placebo effect for many, especially with the newly legalized U.S. made stuff that can only contain 10 parts per million of thujone. And I can do without that horrid liquorice flavor.

Ahh, the flavor is my favorite part! I like other herbal bitters (like Jagermeister and Angostura) already. I tried Absinthe in Victoria, and it came from a pretty bottle written in Swiss, not Czech. It was used in a bourbon cocktail called the "Green Fairy". I felt so amazingly clear-headed. It's the perfect drunk!
Edit:
Apparently a traditional "Green Fairy" is different from what I had.
1 oz absinthe herbal liqueur 1 oz water juice of 1 lemons 2 tsp egg white 1 dash Angostura® bitters
Shake thoroughly with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
I was served something that looked more like an Old Fashioned with a jigger of absinthe substituting for the sugar and garnishes. At the Temple Bar in Victoria BC, down by the hotels.

real absinthe is definitely different. it's not like you're gonna be hallucinating but you'll definitely feel something other than the alcohol. but only in small doses, if you drink too much you'll just be drunk.

absinthe is fantastic. one of the primary reasons it became illegal is because in france - where it began - it was threatening to put winemakers out of business. plus if it is prepared and brewed with low quality standards it could be toxic. a lot of the reputation for its toxicity probably comes from moonshiners passing their stuff off as geniune absinthe. but when made properly it tastes great and is quite safe, long as you don't overdo it. mix with water 1:2-1:5 parts, with or without a dripped sugarcube (but the sugar adds the cool louche effect), has hardly any bite, and gets you tipsy real nice. if it were cheaper and easier to get i would probably never drink anything else, except for the occasional beer. you can buy it overseas and import it into the us, but i wouldn't trust anything bought within the states. the thujone thing is irrelevant as real absinthe contains trace thujone anyway.
go to absinthe.de or eabsinthe.com. stay away from the czech stuff, not even worth a taste, if you are not sure just go for a french or swiss brand.
oh yeah, and drink responsibly!

True. I am of Czech descent, and while I'm proud of the true Pilsners and Budweisers (the style, not the brand), but when it comes to Absinthe - I am ashamed. For good Czech herbal bitters try Becherovka.
As far as the thujone thing goes - yeah the French winemakers paid for a fake study involving thujone as justification for making absinthe illegal. There was no way to measure thujone levels until 2005, so they did a bunch of "estimates" which were *way* off.
If you see some absinthe claiming absurdly high thujone content nowadays, they're just trying to play off the drug-myth and hide the fact that it tastes like poo. Common household sage (salvia officinalis) has higher thujone content (percentage) than absinthe. Concentrated thujone does act as a nerve agent, though. Not a drug - just a poison.
Wikipedia's "Thujone in absinthe" section of their thujone article.
