Mynd I like what you did. I feel so sorry for young people thinking of joining the military. These recruiters are dirty with the way they do things. Here where I am people are up in arms about recruiters staying in the high schools Trying to convince all these KIDS to join. Some people here are so poor and the recruiters will tell them how it will change their lives and all the money and tuitions. That's all great but they can't do any thing with all that when they are dead, not defending our country but protecting the president's and associates' interest. To be fair when they are taking advantage of people's bad situations (poverty, broken families and such) and using it against them mentally there should be some one like me telling them how they could mend their life w/o the military. That is the only way it would be fair.

no, it wasnt in the bookstore. it was an army recruiting office near the bookstore.

Soldiers want credit for protecting our freedoms and liberties. They put their life on the line and all. Millions of soldiers have died for these liberites that we have. Yes, I respect them very much for that. Do they respect these freedoms and liberties that they fight for? It seems to be in vain when they don't. just a thought I had.

Don't bring your kid next time you want to do something like that. Go picket the place for all I care, just don't bring your kid and don't go inside. Because he has the right to scream at you if he wants and it probably upset your kid. He has no obligation to not confront you just because you have a kid. You, on the other hand, have an obligation to keep your kid out of those kinds of situations. Be a Dad (or Mom, whatever you are) first.

Ummm...actually under the No Child Left Behind program, all public schools give every high school student's address, name, and phone number to all local military recruiting centers. Yes, sometimes recruiters DO go door to door. Yes, they DO do cold calls to high schoolers. Yes, they DO set up recruitment centers at high schools.

Get the facts straight.

Would I charge out after the person, screaming profanities at them, standing half an inch from their face, throwing my arms out to my sides like I was about to attack them?

NO, I wouldn't. If I had a SCRAP of confidence in what I was selling, I wouldn't even miss a stride when someone questioned it. It is obvious that the recruiter knew his whole gig was bullshit.

As far as bringing my son and involving him, I am well aware that wasn't a smart idea. However, it was all a spur of the moment thing directed by an emotional/gut reaction. There was not much thought. However, the reaction I got was in no way expected. If I thought for a SECOND that the possiblity of physical violence was real, I never would have done that obviously. As I was doing it, I realized that they would probably want to talk to me. Of course I knew that. I figured that was expected and would have been strange if they DIDN'T want to talk. I love a good debate, and in fact called and talked to a different recruiter for about an hour after I got home about the whole thing. We had a great discussion.

The guy was entirely out of line. I just got out of the military. This guy broke every rule in the book as far as military bearing, military proffesionalism, military core values, etc. etc. etc.

Citizens are the bosses of military people, after all. Where does he get off screaming profanities and making threatening gestures towards one of his bosses?

I got many calls from recruiters when I was in high school. There were several recruiting tables in the commons area of my high school. Did they force me to join? Nope. Hell, the guys at the table wouldn't even talk to anyone about it unless they were first approached.

I have the facts straight. (Is it trendy now to seperate the last line of your statement so that it has more of an impact? If so, I'm joining that bandwagon! :thumbup: )

And to your edit, I say: maybe hes having a bad day? who knows. He's just human. He shouldn't have blown up the way he did. Much in the same way that you shouldn't have stuck your nose in other people's business.

I am not speaking from experience, but I think people who are trained to kill will react a bit differently when other peeps stick their nose into their business.

I tracked down the number of the Battalion Comman Sergeant Major for the Phoenix area, and talked to him at length today. I prefaced the conversation by telling him my political standpoint (pacifist, staunch liberal), just to get it out of the way. I also informed him about my 6 years (99-05)of service in the Air Force, 3 years in special ops in florida, and 3 years in Germany. I was in Florida on September 11, 2001.

I explained the story in an honest, fair way, making sure there was nothing in the integrity of my story that could be questioned.

I also mentioned that I undrstand many would see my actions as out of line; that is by opening the recruitment center's door.

He immediately retorted, "I don't think you were. We have plenty of protestors outside our offices. We are here to defend your right to say what you want, when you want."

He was very understanding, and apologized. He said he will have a face to face "reprimand" with the individual within 24 hours, and get back to me. He took my first name and phone number down. I am almost certain he was NOT just blowing smoke up my butt from the tone of his voice and words he used.

By a reprimand, I am well aware what he meant. I've seen Air Force butt-chewings by simple squadron first shirts, and they can be humiliating and tough just to watch. I can just imagine what an army butt chewing is like...I'm well aware the Air Force is probably the most "lax" branch. Also, this guy is the highest ranked enlisted army individual in that recruiters battalion.

To put it shortly, that guy is screwed.

I'm anxious to hear what the battalion command sergeant major has to say when he calls me tomorrow.

All in all, I'm quite happy so far with his handling of it.

I was in the Army and they DO NOT TOLERATE disrespect to a civilian.
When you're in public and in uniform you are to treat a civilian with the same respect you would an officer.
Never disgrace the uniform

His ass chewing will be monumental.....
especially if his fellow recruiters back your story.

I'm sure he wont be a recruiter much longer.
