My ilk? You must mean rational people who are intelligent enough to recognize that government provided statistics are designed for public consumption, that the numbers are gathered under carefully selected parameters designed to produce results that will bolster in the minds of uncritical thinkers, the perceptions that the government wants them to have.

Let's go back a few months and take a look at this article, dated June 9, 2005. In the article Keith Olbermann states, "According to The New York Times, the Army?s original aim was to get 8,050 new recruits in May. It then scaled that number back, without making that news public, to 6,700. But it only got 5,000. That?s 63 percent of the original goal, 75 percent of the revised goal. Even that doesn?t guarantee that there will be 5,000 new soldiers ready for combat. In 2004, 14 percent, nearly, of all the new recruits dropped out after initial training. And that number jumped to more than 17 percent this year." Then we can look at your link (from Nov 10, 2005) which lists the newer goal at an even lower 4,700.

I did notice that you avoided a comment on how these statistics in your link have been affected by lowered recruitment goals, lowered standards and stop loss, but instead just gave a simple admission that you would expect intelligent people (my ilk) to bring the point up.

It does kind of make the numbers less meaningful than they would have been in the past.

The Army planned on increasing size by 30,000 over a period of a couple years. Last year the goal was to meet this increase in size. The goal wasn't met, but the Army is still trying to grow. This is a lot different than meeting normal recruiting goals. Marines, Navy, and Air Force has had no problems getting recruits. November and October the Army did let in a larger amount of low-scoring recruits, but they say this was just during those months that are normally slow for recruiting. The lower scores won't be accepted in later months.

I hope that is true because one of the reasons that I have always heard being put force as one reason the military was not in favor of a draft was because they only wanted the best and the brightest.

I think the biggest reason they don't want a draft is the level of commitment of draftees. Volunteers want to be in the military. Draftees do not. Best and brightest? I don't think that was ever possible outside of the officer corps from the academies. It is no mean feat to get accepted at one of the service academies.

Like zappa said, it is more about morale. A soldier who wants to be there will be a better soldier. Especially the recruits joining now. They know they will most likely go to war. All the "college money" fellas left over from before 9/11 got out.
