Almost assaulted by Army recruiter while holding my 2yr old son...

I was holding my 2 year old son, coming out of the college book center on 59th and Olive after selling a couple books back.

I saw a child in the Army Recruiting center there, he couldn't have been over 18. He looked like a high schooler in to sign up for delayed enlistment when he graduated.

All I could see was him being blown to pieces before he was 20.

I opened the door, and 2 of the recruiters (not talking to the kid) looked up at me. The one talking to him was giving him the line, "You as an indiviaual blah blah blah integrity blah blah blah your country blah blah blah freedom blah blah blah".

I stood there a second and the recruiter talking to the kid looked over at me. The kid didn't, so I made the PSSST sound, and he looked.

I had eye contact with him and said, "Please...don't do it." He was only about 30 feet away and definately heard me.

I turned and walked away as I heard a chair moving quickly and heard a recruiter saying, "What the hell, that mother..."

I was about ten feet away when the door flew open and the recruiter (not one that was talking to the kid), who was about 6 foot, screamed "Hey you MOTHER F*CKER! Who the hell do you think you are? What the F&CK?!!!"

He walked briskly up to me, to where his nose was almost touching my face. His arms were out to his sides in the traditional "Ima kick your a##" position.

Remember, I'm holding my 2 year old son in my arm this whole time, who is quietly holding onto me.

I looked at him and said, "You came out here swearing, screaming, and threatening me like this? What the hell is wrong with you", in an even tone. I was determined not to yell back at him.

He continued yelling, "You realize you just probably cost the United States Army a contract?"

I said, "I hope so buddy."

"Yeah, punks like you who don't serve anything. Do you serve? No, what have you ever served? Have you ever served?" he continued yelling

"Actually, yeah I have. I just got out of the Air Force." I got out in January of this year, with an honorable discharge under the Air Forces "force shaping" program they are using to downsize. Basically, if your job is overmaned, and you want out, they'll let you out.

"Yeah? What branch?" he asked. He looked like the coach from Beavis and Butthead by this point. You could tell he wasn't prepared for me to be a veteran lol...

"The Air Force, I just told you. What, like, do you want to fight me or something? What is wrong with you? Why are you so friggin' angry?"

He continued yelling, and I don't recall exactly what he said. To say the least I was a bit astounded and threatened, especially since I had my small child with me. I went to the car and started straping my son into the car seat.

He continued, "This is MY HOUSE! You don't come in here and say crap to us like that! This is MY HOUSE! You want me coming over to your house and saying stuff to you!"

I said, "Listen, this isn't your house. Sure you spend time here, but c'mon man...it isn't your actual house", I chuckled.

I got in and sat down in the drivers seat and said to him, "Peace man." He could hear me because he had stormed along behind me as I went to my car about a hundred feet from the office door.

He yelled, "What? Are you threatening me?!?!?! What did you just say?"

I leaned out my car before shutting the door and made a peace sign with my hand and pointed at it and said, "You know, peace? Actually I'm sure you don't understand that, sorry."

I shut my door and drove off.

I would complain to the military, but being a vet, I know who's word they'll take.

What can I do?

He was about six feet, caucasian, black hair.

I really felt as if he was going to attack me or something. If my son wasn't there, I'm almost positive something like that would have happened. I wouldn't have fought back...I'm a pacifist so that's not my thing. I've never been in a fight, even when I've been hit before.

Man that had me practically on the floor laughing.

As to what you can do. Most likely nothing and rightfully so. He used his right to freedom of speech as did you. You may have felt threatened but he didn't actually assault you.

His house :rolleyes:, are you a US citizen? Then it's partially your house, screw that guy.

Knowing what you know now, you should have done it without your son and had someone tape him assaulting you. That's cash money.

Yep...a friend said that also. Talk about a newsitem.

I called into a local radio show tonight and talked about it.

I've had a couple people say on the radio that it was a cheap shot for me to do that.

Sure, okay, it may have been.

However, it was a gut reaction, as the caller said. It wasn't planned...it just sort of happened, it wasn't planned.

So was the reaction of the recruiter.

I accept that and agree with it.

HOWEVER, my gut reaction was making a comment and walking away.

The recruiters gut reaction was calling me a MOTHER F*CKER while I was holding a toddler, and running up to me, getting in my face, following me to my car, and just about attacking me.

BIG difference.

i tip my hat to you sir. i've never had an army recruiter even approach me - i guess they figure that guys with dreadlocks and grateful-dead t-shirts probably aren't about to sign up - but if i ever saw some shit like that taking place, i would (hope) i would do the same!

It was merely a suggestion. If you are going to get your panties in a bundle over people telling others what to do with their lives, then why aren't you mad about the recruiter? His job is to try to get people to do something with their life that they probably wouldn't normally.

I agree with Redstorm. It's a suggestion, it's a comment, he's not telling him YOU CAN'T GO IN THE ARMY! No, he made a (god damn funny) comment, who cares? So the recruiter lost 5 dollars, big whoop. Who cares? The recruiter shouldn't have been up in mynd's face with his 2 year old son in his hands swearing out loud.

Yeah, it's his right to do what he wants (the kid in there), but it is also my right to say whatever I want as long as I'm not threatening someone. First Amendment and all that...

So what if it's a place of business? It's a location open to the public. I didn't enter the building, I was outside, holding the door open.

Pretty sure it was the kid's choice. You don't see the recruiter in the kid's house, egging him on to join the military, do you? No, the kid went to the recruiting office on his own free will, and it was his choice to join the military.

Also, say you were a car salesman, and you were about to make a sale. Then all of the sudden some random person busts into your office, and tells the customer that the car is shit and not to buy it. Would you be pissed? The army recruiter had every right to be pissed, and you fucking people need to mind your own god damn business and not stick your noses in other peoples lives.

It was an army recruitment center IN A COLLEGE BOOKSTORE. I'm pretty sure by simple deduction, you can figure out why the kid was there. To purchase or sell books, that's what people do in bookstores. If you have any experience with recruiters, I'm sure the kid was walking out and the recruiter gave him his whole shpiel on joining the armed forces. Wouldn't that be equally as suggestive as what the original poster did? I believe it would.
