Cobweb question
    #415949 - 10/06/01 03:49 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Yo yo yo

My pet monkey (who starred in Apes A Poppin, homer simpsons fav ape movie) has a casing that is starting to get growth on the top layer :) Colonized PF cakes covered with microwave sterilized verm (nuked for 3 minutes, it was pretty damn hot)

The problem is, the mycelium looks a little fuzzy and whispy where it's poking through the surface. Fearing cobweb mold, he started hitting the growth with h202 in a syringe (he wanted good aim) but then he noticed a few things

1) A previous casing that is on its second flush has growth on the top like that. ALL the growth on it looks just like the stuff he's worried might be cobweb, and it's fruiting just fine

2) There isn't any bubbling when he sprays the stuff with h202. It can compress the fuzzier stuff a little, but no bubbling at all.

3) The growth is only where the cakes are close to the surface of the casing. If you poke the growth with a needle, there is always hard substrate below it (casing wasn't perfectly even) The deeper sections with no immediate substrate under it don't have any growth above it

Does this sound like cobweb mold or paranoia? Should the h202 bubble on cobweb mold? Does cobweb only strike at exposed mycelium, or does the fact that the growth is over the thin parts of the casing layer mean it's probably mycelium?

Thanks guys
Grover
