Packed
    #414938 - 10/05/01 02:31 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

If my substrate was packed too much into the jars could this cause problems? I didn't compress it or anything but I poked it down with a fork, pushing the fork right into the substrate as far as it'd go, creating lots of holes with the tines. It just seems to have pushed the substrate reasonably flush with the sides of the glass.
Will they be okay to birth when the time comes, even if the outside of the cake isn't 100% covered?
Should I just wait until any spaces in the substrate are filled with mycelium before birthing?

the problems with subs too packed down is that they colonize slower... once, a great mind told me that the best way to do it was to scoop the substrate in the jar... i have not changed my methods since.

He somehow manages to breathe in his sepia, wounded-tea, liquid ambiance suspension.

yeah, from what i've heard and read the best tech is to not pack it in. looser subtrate = faster colonization, so thatd be what id advise. best of luck to ya!

If it's packed tightly it will colonize slowly. If it's not 100% colonized, DON"T birth it! You WILL have problems if you birth the cake before it is done colonizing. Pack it loose next time and be patient this time.
