Americans are Idiots, Study Shows

A Gallup poll late last year showed that only 28 percent of Americans accept the theory of evolution, while 48 percent adhere to creationism - the belief that an intelligent being is responsible for the creation of the earth and its inhabitants.

the only problem with polls, and i mean any poll, is that they don't survey but a very small percent of americans. even if the results turned out the same after they surveyed 100% of our population, it would at least show a more accurate representation of people's ideas on the subject.

Bush WAS elected. How much larger of a poll can you get?

Average American: "Gee, I want a leader who is stunned into inactivity during a major crisis, believes a loving God told him to kill, is the only convicted felon ever in office, was able to alienate our allies, created the largest debt ever and who shirked his civic duty."

guess who didn't vote this past election?   not that my single vote would have made a damn bit of difference, but my point is there has never been ANY poll or study conducted ANYWHERE that surveys the entire population of america.  perhaps i strayed a bit off topic with my original post, but i meant to prove this point.

and to be honest, i highly doubt we'd be considered smart americans for electing kerry either.  given our choices of future president, we're going to look like idiots no matter who we voted for.

A gallup poll was probably just 1,000 people with little class diversity. I was dissappointed with the election, but American's are just having a bad moment. We're not idiots, just misinformed, misguided, and scared.

I think there are plenty of people that didn't vote for Bush that fit into the "idiot" category. If you don't believe this come to Hollywood.

I think the problem is poor utilitarian education system combined with a culture that values rampant selfishness and materialism. As a result people become very dull and simple-minded, and logic and reason give way to prejudace and impulse. I've been wondering if this tendancy to ignore facts because of knee-jerk emotions is a global constant or a societal product. As much shit as people talk about Bush, in my life I've met many completely non-rational, deluded and hysterical people who hate him.

Like many polls, this poll presents a false choice.

It is possible to believe in both options. There may be a divine being whose method of creation is evolution.

> I'm speechless. I guess Jesus wins out over Darwin almost 2:1, eh?

Considering that both are theories and that neither have been proven as fact, I don't see how believing in one theory over another makes an idiot out of a person. A true bigot to believe in one theory as fact and then claim that other people believing in a different theory are idiots. Furthermore, belief in creation is not an American monopoly. There are plenty of other countries that have a much higher percentage of creationists than America.

It is easy to dismiss those folks as idiots, but we fail to realize that not all creationists are fundamentalists. As someone mentioned, there is theistic evolution. Not everyone who believes in creationism believes that the world is 12,000 years old, that dinosaurs never existed, or that all human experience BCE is recorded in the bible.

i guess many people still have faith. I almost think that religion is just another way to run from your problems. you have trouble and you go and pray to god. in my opinion, its Darwin all the way. We as humans cannot fathom the amount of time our species has spent on earth- and the billions of years before that. Religion is a way to "explain things that cannot be explained." I see why humans might have needed religion at many points of history to survive but its religion that causes most wars.. in the past 200 years, we learned more about human nature than the 3 million years before that. Presently, there is much more evidence about evolution as opposed to some supreme being just making everything. There's sooo many points that aims towards evolution... OK so if we did not evolve, why are we born with gill slits?? didn't god make humans perfect? People have been living with religion for as long as we had the brains to think of the concept. Since people have been living with religion for tens of thousands(if not more) of years, its hard for them to grasp evolution because the concept has only been around for a couple hundred. Whether you like it or not, the earth has been in the making for billions of years and humans have been in the making for millions of years. According to the bible, humans were "made" around 20 thousand years before Jesus.
