Color of karo liquid

I bought a bottle of light karo syrup way back and managed to make lots of liquid culture that lead to tons of spawn jars. The syrup itself was clear and I remember the 1/2 jars I used as being clear also, even after pc'ing.

I used the same bottle of karo recently and the jars are yellow after pc'ing. There is little or no growth in the jars after weeks (and they've been incubated at proper temps).

Does it sound like the karo carmelized in the jars? Am I'm running the stove too hot or something?

I'm not sure what you did wrong.

try this...I use karo light too.

4cc's karo light
96cc's of warm water.
stirr it up really good.
put a marble into the jar...to break up the mycelium later.
put your lid on.
pressure cook it for 30 mins at 15 psi, or 45 at 10 psi.
after you are done pressure cooking the jar...let it cool down.
after it has cooled down inoculate with 1cc or 2cc's...from your spore syringe.
swirl the jar around a little to mix the spores into the karo water.
then put into your incubator...81 to 84 degrees F.

the jar will come out looking like this when it is colonized.


the jar in the picture is a tall 1/2 pint with 8cc's of light karo and 192cc's of water.

if your using larger jars...just multiply the ratio.

i'm using a different brand of syrup that has a yellowish tint to it, I decided to get this because it had half of the sodium in it, from what I understand salt is bad for fungus growth, is this going to work or what anyone else out there use different brands of syrup?
