The Shroomery needed help and boy did the community deliver! I awoke today feeling a little bummed out about the future thinking I had screwed up and that the Shroomery would be shut for a period of time while I figured out a way to fix the current problems. So I asked for help from the bottom of my heart, and you all came through in shining colours!
This is me and 3D's first time running a website, we've learned a lot so far, but obviously there are things we aren't doing well enough.. But what we've said from the start is that we care a lot about this place, and we will do everything we can to make it better and of course to ensure its survival.
We are both students, and outside of here we have busy lives, but we both enjoy doing what we do and its days like this I am reminded of how much this place means to us all.
My message may have been dramatic, but its what I feared seeing as the start of the month was coming and I honestly couldn't have imagined the overwhelming support we got in just one day!
I promise you all that not only will this dontation push save us, but that this will be a good wake up call for us in regards to financing this site. I will make sure that this place becomes self-sufficient and that the future of this wonderfull community is safe for a long time to come.
So my thanks to you all! I truly have been touched today by your generosity and you can all thank yourselves for helping out the shroomery in its time of need!
You people rock, and now we can go on with our shroomery lives knowing our home is safe.

Just wanted to echo Rail Gun and say that NuShroom is indeed a prick. You have the balls to slam and slander the place that gives you a good chunk of your business for $40/month? Why is it I get the impression that some spore vendors feel like the Shroomery owes them something? They owe you NOTHING because if you think the Shroomery is ripping you off then the solution is simple: fuck off and don't come back. Negative assholes like you are the scourge of this place. And I must add that I deeply resent the comment you made about Thor spending Shroomery money on the gathering so "people will like him". Not one single penny of Shroomery money went towards that event so shut the fuck up.

Crobih, let this be a lesson to you that in a monarchy like shroomery, if you bad mouth peoples that the admin likes, you will be outcast. In democracy people could openly make suggestions to better their site without getting yelled out by whale killers.

For $299 per month, shouldnt you be able to set up your own server with as much bandwith as you could ever use with a dsl connection and as much space, ram, etc you would need. I am taking a computer class and within the last couple weeks I have learned enough to build my own server, I just need to know how to network it.
I do indeed plan on setting up my own server with a dsl or better connection in about 6 months. I plan on having 1032+ ram, 1.4 ghz+ cpu, and oodles of hard drive space. With one what I hear you pay in one month for this site, you could pay me for a year, and that is to pay for my maintanence of the server, and adding the programs you would use, and to pay partially for the components which are not that cheap (save for the ram, of course, that is dirt cheap).
I am not saying any of this would happen, but it seems to me that if $299 is indeed what you are paying, you should be able to set up your own server based upon the donations you recieved and a bit more out of pocket cash and not have to worry about monthly fees again, only for connection and electricity.
I dunno, I think I am just dreming.

the only problem with setting up a site like that (off of dsl) is that its a relatively small "pipe" for lots of people to use at one time. I'm sure the server they have is on a major backbone with at least dual t3's if not oc3's

Yeap, people don't realize that dedicated server hosting is not cheap, you can get decent packages for around $300, but we had to get a bunch of 'add ons' to speed up our site, like added RAM which costs a stupid extra $150 a month added to our base package.

the problem with all that is for their monthly fee the're getting about 100g worth of transfer, at probably oc12 speeds (thats something like 256mbit/sec, if not more. I never really bothered to memorize all the speeds)
DSL will max out at 7mbit up and down, for 1.4mbit up/down it costs around anywhere between 250 and 500$ depending on where you live, not to mention your gonna need more then one for redundancy in case one goes down.
Although your right on with the building your own server, except then you need to be half way proficiant with unix and networking. (except your gonna be putting 1024MB ram not 1032)
I did some pricing on different speed lines when we opened our computer store, the fastest line available to us is a T3 (several times slower then the shroomerys current net connection) and the telco wanted some 15,000 a month, 1200 for a T1. Frac. T1 wasnt an option. So, paying even 1000 a month would be well worth it.
I just wish they could build their own server and send it to the hosting company, things could be so much faster here. =(

Wooo Whoo!!! I'm glad to hear we made our goal.. As for nushroom he can fuck off.. I don't know you guys from jack on the street but I've made a donation and yeah the thought crossed my mind that, it would be a good scam but I don't feel like you could do that to your bud's at the shroomery. I know I couldn't.
As for alternatives:
I'm sure that if you could work out an arrangement with the hosting company about putting a server of yours on the backbone we could come through with something. I would volunteer my 6yrs unix/networking experience in helping get a server built. If you PM me where you guys are based out of I will help in researching additional options.

Anyway, I know dsl is not going to allow enough transfer, so I say dsl+ as If I were going to have a site like this hosted on it I would definatley up it to something much better. Cable is an option. I say dsl as that is what I can afford by myself, but given a few bucks per month extra and I would set up something much nicer (faster, better).
Anyway, there would be many more qualified people to do something like that as I am still just a student.
Oh, and I know it is 1024, just a thinking error. All the different ram sizes can be a bit hard to remember, but it is just 2X 512.

No offense but IMHO our local news station recieves advertising dollars that our nationwide PubliclyBroadcastingSpores network doesn't.
If this $$ is so badly needed, and I have no way of knowing that answer, then there SHOULD DEFINATELY be a sperate forum granting access to ALL of The Shroomery's financial records. And in the event that I can see that it is warranted, I would definately contribute to keeping this place open. I can't trust (or mistrust) someone because I like them. That kind of shit landed someone I know in prision.

We will be opening the books so to speak, more of a FYI of our bills, to whom, how much, etc.....
Right now there's some problems with our current host, we've been unable to access our online billing history for a while now and those bitches are not of much help getting it fixed.
One day I see the Shroomery actually making money, when that day comes I will either use that money for paying 3Dshroom or anyone who is running the site, or for things like T-shirts, promo stuff, etc.....
But yeah accountability is important, I agree with that.
But this isn't a public access channel, this is a privately owned website. People who donate understand that and obviously support us. I will share with you what I feel everyone should know, but I'm not going to have all the websites finances available for anyone to see....

LOL! Yea, like the shroomery is publicly owned! * snort * LOL! They can request donations all they want and STILL have NO obligation to show any kind of records. That would be silly. To let people know to much of the behind the scenes action is bad as well. Having just recently found the shroomery
I am excited that I made it here just in time :) As for donations... I am not usually one to donate to causes where I just hand money over.... But for some trinket or a sweatshirt I would be glad to pay $40 or $50 bucks to help out and receive a momento! :) Guess it depends on the person. As for nushroom, after reading the vendor threads, specially one certain one, I was getting a bad image of him... NOW that I have read his little contributions to this thread...
Well, I am disgusted. Does he fork over any advertising money? If not, I would suggest that his ip and any other ips he uses be banned until he comes up with a public apology for being such a dick. It is just not kosher to come onto the board and waste the moderators/owners time by asking bullcrap questions and questioning any moves they make. I mean, of course with an apology and a promise to no longer bash the very board he is posting to he should be able to remain a member of this community. But this is NOT a public yahoo board. This board appears to be maintained at some levels of difficulty by just a few people, who seem to work very hard around here. Moderator bashing, or basically any figurative comparing them to Nazi's should be grounds for banishment.

This wasn't a republician, democrat, or even libertarian contribution request. We all greatly appreciate this community and would do what is necessary to save it if, and when, it is needed.
No one( not even nushroom) has said that "they" don't have the right to request donations.
But what I am saying, and Thor stated he agrees with, is that "in the spirit of the shroom" such a request(one stating that the demise of a community that many have contributed to will come about in "2" days) should at least be followed up by transcripts warrenting the request.
If it is true then I, for one, wouldn't even need a t-shirt to show my support. And thats not to say that I need to see a dire need in order to.
I believe that everyone has a right and an obligation to express their thoughts/opinoins regardless if its their first post or #4985th. So I welcome any feedback you'd like to give and like EVERY shroomerite (I'd hope) can relate to your passion for a place such as this.
On the Nazi note:
I'm hoping you're being sarcastic when you say "any figurative comparing them to Nazis should be grounds for banishment." Banishment for freely expressing one's opinions/thoughts is Nazi-like in and of itself.
Awhile back nushroom got on someone who posted in the wrong threar with what I thought was little too much "gusto" (sue me if its a typo) but that never changed my opinion of him. Do your home work(like you really have time for that if you just discovered the Shroomery and are busy having tons of fun discovering the things it has to offer other than politics) and you will discover that nushroom has been a MAJOR contributer to this community, pays advertising dollars, and is well respected among many. Myself included.
Now that I've got nushroom's shit on my nose(can I get some free filter disks now ), and you've got Thor's, maybe you can smell the fact that shit is shit and no matter whose ass it comes out of it still stinks.
Thererfor I'd rather have my head stuck up my own ass ('cause smelling another man's ass isn't my style- no offense to Ginsburg fans, the man was ahead of his time) and base my opinions on facts.

What are the facts? What is the going rate for the service the shroomery recieves? And after the going rate, how much compensation should be given to those responsible for it's upkeep? All in the spirit of the shroom.

Let me ask you this, a private website asks for donations, people donate, this is a common occurance on the web.... I've seen this on many occasions on sites that have donation drives.... None of them post their financial records, why should we be any different?
This is a private site, I'm not hiding anything, I just feel personal finances are really nobodies business but the owner of the site. I haven't had one person ask me to divuldge financial info out of those who donated, yet a few people keep asking.
There is nothing to hide, in fact I've told others recently in a thread in off topic the rough expenses of the shroomery... We pay monthly approx $550 for hosting, we paid about $500 when we moved over, also paid around $300 in registering domain names... Plus some other charges like set up fees for the extra ram, added features we put on the server.... Even paying for an extra month of hosting from our old server which we had to pay since there was a contract.
Needless to say, this place isn't cheap, and the Ads are pretty close now to paying the fees, thanks to some extra support of the vendor community after this crisis.
But the problem wasn't really the monthly, I was only paying say 1/4 of the hosting out of my own pocket, but it was the set up fees, registrations, etc... that added up, and I calculated roughly 1000 would cover all those expenses.
Again, if you want the exact records I won't be posting them publicly. This is a private site, and I don't think anyone has a right to view the private finances of the site. If people donate its because they care, if they feel me not disclosing the financial statements is wrong, that is their right...
Nothing is being hidden, I know nushroom is convinced of that, but he has other motives for bashing me....

We don't [run] off donations, we run off advertising and up until now my own pocket. The donation drive was done because the bills were getting high and I needed to bring them all down, mr Visa wasn't happy.

How do you know this? Absolutely untrue, until I brought up the seriousness of the need for donations, we went a long time since our last donations. Believe me dontations up until this last week had been pretty tiny.
People don't really donate unless we express a need, if we don't mention anything people don't donate. Those people who do in normal times, are extraordinary.

This $1000 wasn't for this month only ... Its an acumulated debt that had been building for 5 months.

Again, we are not public, we are private. We do not run off donations, in fact if we did, we would have surived maybe the first month after me and 3D took over. Up until recently donations made up a tiny % of revenue for this place.
If and when we make any money off this site, we will use that money to work on buying our own server..
I've disclosed quite a bit here, you know our monthly costs, our AD revenue is a little tricky right now since there are going to be some changes very soon and I can't be sure of exactly what the future holds in that regard.
But I will say this, after these $$ problems, our vendors have stepped up to help us out, and I honestly am very confident that now we will have enough monthly to pay our bills and hopefully start saving up for our own server.
I've answered all your questions, and I can't imagine you need more unless you think there is something shady going on. I know some think that, but those I can count on my right hand.

Just a quicky... I have NOTHING against nushroom. He was one of the first people to talk to me when I started posting here... But what it all boils down to is if you don't like the way things are run on another guys board... Then either
keep it to yourself and your buddies, or leave! No reason to make public some of the stuff I have seen posted. Most moderators working in the online biz who are fairly experienced nip that stuff in the bud. And pull it. It's their right, their site and their perogotive. If anything the moderators here are FAR more lenient than they might be.
