They are offering some really great features.  We had thought about this in the past but didn't really know what all we could offer.  We may possibly come up with something similar in the future.

If you like this idea, keep the feedback coming. We do need to figure out some alternative funding methods to keep this place functioning at the high level it does, and we are always interested in new ideas! :laugh:

Yeah, I don't understand that statement either...

I think what is being discussed here, is creating additional services or benefits for people who wish to donate a little money, not stripping back on already existing services. I think the idea is to keep the Shroomery fully featured and free, but to come up with a small incentive for people who wish to contribute...

I agree, this should not be something that punishes those who don't pay. Rather just added features for those who want to contribute.

The shroomery should not have to rely as much on vendors, and this could be a good way to achieve less dependance on sponsors.

I would support it, but I'm a pennieless college student, You would take away my avater, my sig, my ability to search, and my ability to rate people becuase I cannot afford to pay the shroomery. As much as I would like to support the shroomery, I cannot, I don't have the means. I don't see why you need to punish active members who simply cannot afford to send money to the shroomery.

I think the way people are talking, you wouldn't loose anything you already have. Instead, if you paid, you would get more things that don't currently exist... an email account, a larger upload limit, a nifty "I support the shroomery" icon by your name, etc...

I don't know how this idea got started, but read the thread again. The Administration is not going to take away anything -- we are simply considering offer some additional features to paying members.

I would assume it would be used to pay for bandwidth, to pay back debt for old servers, to pay for faster new servers, to pay for more disk space to hold more images from looser upload restrictions, etc.

I like it, but I think it might be a good idea to give ssl encryption to every member. Not sure if it would be too much of a strain on they system, but I know of a couple of boards that do this.

I seriously doubt that the amount of contributions received would warrant opening a merchant account for direct cc processing.  There will probably be a mailing address for checks/mo's (even cash if you like to gamble with your luck) or you could pay through paypal with your cc or bank account (yet another gamble :wink: )

Hello,

I think a good idea would be to allow paying members to have a personal notepad in their "My Home" section. Kind of like the one offered at NansNook. So they could keep track of trades, ideas, threads, dates, etc.

Hopefully a good sugestion.

I don't think we'd want to do this.  If you use enough common sense, you will know if you feel good about trading with someone or not before you go through with it.  Hell, you could even make it a personal rule that you won't trade with anyone other than shroomery supporters - or you could reserve marketplace contest/trade threads that you make for shroomery supporters only.  It's essentially the same thing you'd gain by creating a mini-marketplace.. though by this route, it may help encourage more members to become supporters :grin:

accessing through a different domain is way sweet. As far as the site being office-friendly, I have my skin set to Mystery Blue Ocean and its prmarily white and gray...pretty clean and easy to browse in my office env.

Hell no. The shroomery has flourished without any real charge to the members (they asked for help once, but thats about it) and will continue to do so. no way should any services be taken away. If the shroomery needs help, then ask. I'll do my best now (which is considerably more than i could do previously) as i did then. However, i do like the option to get more stuff...and if the shroomery could setup an email system that would keep the home ip of the mail adresee private, i'd friggin LOVE one of those. Hell, i'd buy that for a dollar! (or 200) BUt don't limit peoples options just casue they're too poor or too cheap to support a site they love! That'd be asinine.
