Site speed will improve a lot in the next few months, we are always spending money to improve our server and will continue to make it as fast as we can afford.
I think the BB is quite perfect to be honest, its got a lot of forums but most of them are not overwhelmingly busy like OTD and have added a lot I think to the overall community. The arguments against OTD to me are silly since if you choose not to click on it you'll never have anything to complain about
I think creating another alternative to OTD with the pub, or which was called earlier 'cheers' and 'thors whores' This was a move which I'm very pleased with as its really given everyone a home to chit chat in an enviornment that they prefer.
Also, I agree that there is a good balance of forums. The site is generally about mushrooms, and I think we have a good balance between mushroom forums, community forums, and other drug forums. And the layout of the forums and how the forums are run are just about perfect in my opinion.

I think the cult forums as always have a lot of repetitive questions and that will always be the case on this board as it is on every message board around. People feel better having people answer a common question rather than looking themselves.
True, repetitive questions are inevitable in forums like mushroom cultivation, general questions, mushroom hunting etc... But there are always people starting with absolutely no knowledge on the subject, and if these forums are helping people learn, then there really is no problem with repetitive questions.

Re: "Please Specify"
The search function could be much better. Use your imagination. One thing I remember thinking of would be the ability to search not only by username but by the username that the username replied to. IOW, to find this post i would search for posts made by debianlinux in response to Ythan.
I discovered the shroomery via ADM newsgroup many many moons ago, long before I ever actually registered here.
Overall, this site is the best ever.

i have noticed that if you type: shroomery.org/forums/login.php
in your address bar then you can login sans security code. when the preceding "www." is present the security code is required.
also, i get weird cookie errors that require a browser close and reload to fix that I never EVER get anywhere else. this has been the case for a couple years.

Would you like to see us actively try and recruit more members (i.e. advertise)?
Advertising MIGHT be a bad idea. Of course, you shouldn't advertise with just anyone. Would have to be selective, as to avoid unneeded risks.

could we have a box in the display preferences that turns off the view of certain forums? I think if people chose not to see OTD (or maybe another interest forum), they might have less problems with it.

you can already choose which forums you want to view and which you don't by using the "Favorite Forum! (toggle)" link at the bottom of any forum's page to choose your favorite forums. to view only the forums you have chosen, click the "Show Favorite Forums" link in the "Extra Information" box at the bottom of the screen on the list of forums page.

I also agree that is a terrible idea. There is a vast amount of knowledge in there and something is bound to be overlooked. And some people would like to hear the experience of other users and the input of multiple people instead of a single document. Methods change and vary, so do opinions on the methods.
I also thought of another thing which brought me here. I think the hunting forum should be limited to picure ID's only. It is very easy for someone to describe a mushroom incorrectly especially when they really want it to be what they are searching for. This could lead to a false ID, which as everybody knows could be a deadly accident. There are far too many posts with limited information. A picture speaks a thousand words, and the ID process can proceed from there much easier...
Not only just improve it, make it safer as well...

Be careful what you wish for..... I think you need a disclaimer in your signature... You are lucky...
And, I noticed a login problem with the security code as well. When not logged in I hit the archives link (from the main index). It then asked me to login to view all of the archives. When taken to the login screen I get the old version sans secutiry code...
That thing sucks IMO, my norton password manager will no longer work with that. $!#% I hate this place now, im leaving and never looking back.... Making my type in my username and password...
And if I did not state this before, I would like to see the teks archived a bit better, and perhaps an experimental teks section as to not confuse the noobs. Personally if I were a newbie, I would find the FAQ difficult to navigate. It needs to be catored to the newbie, but have the info seasoned users can find easily... I think if the Shroomery were to have more stuff archived, it would greatly improve the great resource it already is. You just really need to search for some things far more than one should have to. Browsing through countless posts in a search result looking for your answers is not what I would call "user friendly", especially for newcomers.
Did I mention keep up the good work?

I wasn't going to post feedback since I am so new to the site, but I've been on it every day since registering (and a few weeks before that), so I think I've started to get a good sense of the place. I'm also not a 14-year-old.... that was a very very long time ago.
This morning I read some really stupid posts from morons who don't read FAQ's and are completely stupid about security, which prompted this commentary.
1) Should the Shroomery be advertised? Absolutely NOT. Seekers can find it easily enough; I did. Those who aren't interested shouldn't be finding it. It's just asking for trouble.
2) Dealing with newbies I am a newbie, but old enough to have just a little wisdom (maybe ). Maybe there should be a time limit before a registrant can post questions. Basically force people to look around before opening their mouths. I think this might help cut down on the clutter.
The information you guys provide is invaluable. My research is just starting, but I know that there is no way I could have gotten so far so fast without this site and the great posts of people like Magash and others. I don't see a whole lot of flames at newbies; in fact I think you guys are most gracious (more so than I would be!)
What frightens me are the posts from people like stephanie. That's just fucking stupid. And the other that is just getting in the way right now is darkslider802. These people are lazy and ignorant and don't deserve the courtesy of a reply.
3. Speed & structure of site I've gotten comfortable with it pretty quickly and find navigation to be fairly easy. One nice thing would be to have the login screen on the home page so I don't have to go the forums to log in. Speed is not a problem, but then again I am on broadband. -- Overall, I think this site is fantastic. But like any good thing, it can be co-opted and used for bad things. Keep a watchful eye and don't lose sight of the goal: helping expand knowledge and understanding without causing unnecessary headaches in the "real" world. (At least that's my view of the goal!)
BTW, I support your sponsors and appreciate knowing that there are safe/reliable vendors out there who adhere to shroomery principles.
-------------------- I am merely transcribing the thoughts of my blind buddy; none of the things I write originate with me.
