ok i don't know if there is already a thread about this but...
look what they are doing @ www.overgrow.com
Quote:
Why should you subscribe to an Overgrow Premium Account?
Nothing about Overgrow is changing! All of the features you're used to as a normal member will continue to be free. If you'd like to access these new and additional features, you'll need to upgrade your account to the Premium Service.
What new features are available?
* SSL Encrypted Connections * Secure real-time chat with other members * Office safe forum theme * Image Gallery Editor * Member's Only Lounge * Unlimited Private Message storage * Avatar size increased to 70x70 * Maximum upload image size increased * Browse the forums with full size images, not thumbnails * Special discounts with Overgrow Sponsors * Ability to start special-interest forums * Title of "Overgrow Supporter" with your name
Future plans include @overgrow.com email addresses and personal grow diaries.
How can you pay for the upgrade?
Since your username must be attached to the order, we will not be accepting any online or credit card payments for your security. To prevent any attachment of your real name to your username, you should send a money order or cash through the mail. If you're in the US, postage to Canada is 60 cents and make sure it is an international money order. All funds listed here are in US Dollars.
How much does a subscription cost?
* $15 - 3 months ($5 per month) * $24 - 6 months ($4 per month) * $36 - 12 months ($3 per month) * $200 - Lifetime (never expires)
after some thought, i think this is a pretty good idea...

They are offering some really great features. We had thought about this in the past but didn't really know what all we could offer. We may possibly come up with something similar in the future.
Thanks for posting this

great idea huh...
i would just really like a larger pic upload limit... and a shroomery.org e-mail would be pretty sweet.
that alone would be worth $5 a month imo.
make best of Time.

If you like this idea, keep the feedback coming. We do need to figure out some alternative funding methods to keep this place functioning at the high level it does, and we are always interested in new ideas!

I would also pay for that. Anything I can do to help keep this place going. This is where I learned to grow after all.

Yeah, I don't understand that statement either...
I think what is being discussed here, is creating additional services or benefits for people who wish to donate a little money, not stripping back on already existing services. I think the idea is to keep the Shroomery fully featured and free, but to come up with a small incentive for people who wish to contribute...

Hello,
I just wanted to chime in and say that I too would have no problem with subscribing to the shroomery.

you're kidding right? it would be most uncool to take features away from the financially challenged. don't we have like, 15 sponsors @ $200 a month each? the idea is to give more features to those who think it's worth it. /me smacks Fliquid over the back of his head.

I agree, this should not be something that punishes those who don't pay. Rather just added features for those who want to contribute.
The shroomery should not have to rely as much on vendors, and this could be a good way to achieve less dependance on sponsors.
