Oregon Morels (with lots of Pictures)
    #4087484 - 04/23/05 04:15 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I was mowing my lawn which has laid fallow for over 8 months and to my surprise I noticed that there was a fungus which I had mowed over.  Upon closer inspection I was delighted to find it was a morel.  Morels growing in my backyard of all places, how nice.  I was a bit bummed that I mowed over a few specimens, however using my instinct, I began parting the knee-high grass and I found 2 that were untouched.  I decided to leave that area unmowed and will give it some water, even though it is raining right now.  This is very exciting as these are my first morel finds and the first time I will eat morels.  I am soaking them in some salt water to get rid of the bugs (I found a slug on the inside of the larger one). The larger one got a little cutting to avoid some insect munching holes, but all in all it looks like good eating to me.  Wish me luck that these guys are just the first flush!!

The perfect little one beside the larger specimen.  These are to be enjoyed within the next few hours.

Mowed and rotten, the earth shall reclaim it.

A two-some, too rotten for eating, the earth shall reclaim them.

The large one.  A few slug bites, but this one is going in the pan!

This one was missing it's top, looks like it would have been huge.  I left this one for the insects.

Sorry the little one didn't have a clear picture taken in the wild.  These were found in the souther Willamette Valley.  Happy mushrooming  :mushroom2:

I've seen some pretty big specimens that some one might trip on

Viscid found a specimen that was about 2 lbs....it was unreal!

I saw it in person, well at least the stem. I didn't take a pic. Viscid might have one, but I have not seen or talked to him in months. I heard he was going to hit up Alaska for some morels...I bet he is there right now.

If you are out there, send me a PM.

Joshua
