azure experiment looking good so far
    #397334 - 09/18/01 02:07 AM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Because we had some spawn left we decided to use it to inoculate some soaked woodchips. These were put in a plastic, covered with casing soil and planted with grass seed.
It stands on my balcony, fortunately the grass has not died. I expect to see some fruits from it within a couple of weeks

Wow that is nice.

How deep is your casing layer? Is it just verm and peat moss? Did you add the grass seed before or after you sterilized the casing mix? dose the grass take a lot of water from the mycellia , if it does how do you compensate? dose the grass affect the rate of fruiting ? Do you need to cut the grass?

I am sorry for so many questions. I think I going to try the grass to increase the amount of O2 in my terriums and cut down on contams. Any info will help.

i would think that although the grass would use some water taht it would actually help to retain water as well... anyone have any thoughts on that?

Forgot to answer some questions:

<<How deep is your casing layer? >>

About 3 cm deep

<<Is it just verm and peat moss? >>

Actually it's a mixture of cactus soil and vermiculite

<<Did you add the grass seed before or after you sterilized the casing mix? >>

I did not sterilise the casing layer.

<<dose the grass take a lot of water from the mycellia , if it does how do you compensate? >>

I'm sure it takes some moisture from the casing, but i water the box every other day (1 liter but most of it runs out from the bottom),

<<dose the grass affect the rate of fruiting ? >>

Because the box is on a balcony it will be exposed to the elements more than a regualor outdoor bed. The grass should offer some protection from the wind and sun.

<<Do you need to cut the grass?>>

I never cut it.

>Actually it's a mixture of cactus soil and vermiculite

cactus soil??? really??? i had some cacti growing in my room on the little ledge by my window and all types of mushrooms would grow from it (thats why i put them outside, where they got knocked over and died) why is it that the fungi liked the cacti soil i bought for my cactus???

it begins with an "m" and ends with an "ushroom"

Shellacct, I know that when growing a plant especialy indoors a good trick to keep it from dieing when you leave on vaction is to cover it in plastic, this is because plants perspire alot of water so covering with saran wrap would put most of the water from the plants back into the soil while keepin O2 levels high. I am not certain but i think the grass produces more O2 then fungus needs alest untill fruiting. It would be cool to put an O2 sensor in the covered tray to see how levels fluxuate during fruiting cycles. I know hydroponics supplies store sell CO2 sensors put i would not know where to get an O2 sensor?

It could be worth trying that method on liberty caps as I think they are are grass loving species.
