It's not bran new, because it was handed down from my brother to me. It's a blusey looking red Epiphone. I'm pretty excited and I hope I get a lot better at it Practice, practice, and some more practice. I'm learning a Jimi Hendrix song also. Edit: took the "HURRAY!" out. It was really gay sounding.

Learn some basic scales and practice them every day. First start with a two octave C major scale.
C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C (one octave)
If you don't know where the notes are on the fretboard, I'd definitely recommend learning them eventually. First start with only one octave, and on the A string, 3rd fret. Play the scale up, then back to the low C. Use down-up picking with your right hand.
Once you get that down well enough, add one another octave, and play two octaves up, then back down to the low C. Try to play the scale all over the fretboard, in as many positions as you can think of. Over time, add more scales to your practicing, like minors, pentatonics, whatever scale you can get your hands on.
Also, it's good if you can use a metronome (www.metronomeonline.com) and slowly work up your scales, faster and faster. Start off just playing one note per click, then try two, three, or four.
Also, train your ear and pay attention to the intervals in between notes. It will really come in handy in the long run, figuring out songs by ear, or improvising what's in your head.

As well as the C major scale (learn 2 or 3 of the patterns for this; there are many) you should also learn the Am Pentatonic. You'll never find a more useful scale. Have fun man.

"Most players, upon picking up a guitar for the first time, have a tendency to strum or pick the strings in a series of either downstrokes or upstrokes. For the rank beginner, this is fine, but the limitations of this pattern soon become self evident, requiring the player to expand his technique if he is to progress as a musician. The first and most obvious improvement one can make is to begin combining upstrokes and downstrokes in an alternating fashion, known as "alternate picking".
By making use of both upstrokes and downstrokes, alternate picking allows the player to play more efficiently, and can lead to an audible improvement in one's playing literally overnight."
Here's some exercises to show what it is: http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/f/p/fpm108/glw/exercises/exercise5.htm
The first and third note of each beat will be a downstroke, and the second and fourth notes will be upstrokes. These exercises are pretty natural for alternate picking, but even with more complex stuff, alternate picking should be used (within reason). Once you have down-up-down-up under control, start with up and do up-down-up-down. Practicing alternate picking allows you to just let your right hand go on its own, so you only have to concentrate on your left hand.

Har har, just sealed a deal on Esp Ltd VB-300 baritone guitar... Ended up paying 100? for a 700-800? guitar. Capitalism for the win.
-------------------- when you're watching television the higher brain regions (like the midbrain and the neo-cortex) are shut down, and most activity shifts to the lower brain regions (like the limbic system). The right hemisphere is twice as active as the left, a neurological anomaly. The crossover from left to right releases a surge of the body?s natural opiates: endorphins, which include beta-endorphins and enkephalins. Endorphins are structurally identical to opium and its derivatives (morphine, codeine, heroin, etc.).After just 30 seconds of watching television the brain begins to produce alpha waves, which indicates torpid (almost comatose) rates of activity.
