How do i do a 'guitar chuck' ?

Ive been playing for awhile just picking mainly learning from tab.
But ive found afew guitar lesson vids on youtube and for some of them you need to be able to do a guitar chuck..

This is the first time ive put any effort into it and it's difficult..
I want to use my strumming hand to mute the strings but i can't get my palm on all of them at the same time before i strum..
I usually play without a pic, but i can't do this at all without one.


Anyone got any tips or do i just need to practice more ?..

It sounds pretty good i'm dying to get it down well..

If by 'guitar chuck' you mean palm muting, here is how:

You will need a pick.

With your pick in your thumb and forefinger, place the edge of your hand -- the edge with your pinky on it -- across the bridge, as if you are 'karate chopping' it.

Roll your hand over until your pick is in position to pick the strings. Play the chord with quick downstrokes (though I'm not sure what kind of song you are playing).  If you are muting too much, slide your hand in the bridge direction.  Play around with this.

You don't need to worry about muting all the strings; it's almost always used with power chords and other diads... two or three strings.

Most of the time this is done with distortion and your bridge pickup.

'Palm muting' is a misnomer because you don't really do it with your palm.

If you are talking about something else, then ignore this :shrug:

That's good advice because ive been struggling with muting for the same reasons why i can't do a chuck i think..

A chuck how i mean is where you hit all the strings muted quickly in the middle of a strum to give a percussion noise..
It makes a basic strumming pattern more interesting...

Hard as fuck to learn though.

Try using your fretting hand. Depending on what chord you're playing or whatever notes, it may be easier in some circumstances. The downside I guess would be that you need to be quick at changing chords (going from muting all strings back into the chord you're playing). You can use just 1 finger to barre all of the strings or just lift the fingers slightly off the finger positioning for the current chord, and add an extra finger to muffle the untouched strings.
See what works best for whatever type of song you're doing. The above method might work better for faster strums.

Ahh ok... now I know what you mean.

Sheepish is right, use your fretting hand. Fret the chord normally, but lift your fingers up so that you're still fingering the chord but not fretting it. This will mute it. Play the chord normally, with downstrokes and upstrokes, and you'll get the chucka-chucka sound you're looking for. It takes a bit of practice to alternate between fretting and 'chucking' in a rhythmic fashion, but you'll use it alot.

One problem is that if you're only touching each string in one place with your fretting hand, you may play touch harmonics by accident (which can sound cool too, but is not always desired.)

To remedy this you have to use BOTH hands to mute. Mute with the left hand like I described above, but also mute with your left hand.

Sounds really cool with some light distortion and a wah pedal.
