Differintiating between cobweb and Mycellium
    #4040327 - 04/11/05 09:17 AM (19 years, 10 days ago)

This may seem redundant but whats the easiest way to differentiate between cobweb and mycellium

Experience  Pictures will help us. In the Contam forum (where this really should have gone anyway) theres a post pinned to the top with pictures of all the contams, including cobweb. Go look at it. You'll know when you finally get it though. It spreads INCREDIBLY quick too (as in a whole quart in a couple days).

Both of those are mycelium.

Look on the contam page like I said to see pictures and learn about contams. I PROMISE its a great page..right at the top of the contam forum, easy to find. Cobweb is the only thing I can think of thats grey, but green molds (and other molds I think) have white mycelium. It looks different then cubie mycelium though. Again, the only way to really tell is experience...once you know it, you just know it. Contams generally spread incredibly quick and have odd smells...thats when you know theres something wrong.

Mycelium can be rhizos, linear, or cottony or anywhere in between though. Color can vary depending on substrate, as can growth style. Because of that mycelium can look very different, even within the same jar (if multi spore). It can make things difficult, but after some time you'll figure it out...generally when a jar is done for...you can tell though and you go "Ohhhhh, thats what it looks like"

Cobweb mold will grow like mad and become very obvious... cobweb is darker than cubensis mycelium... more of a grey than a white.
Once you have seen cobweb mold...it is very easy to tell the difference.
Regular cubensis mycelium can look an awful lot like cobweb until you know what to look for.

Here is a picture of cobweb mold.
