cobweb and mycellium

i woke this morning and checked my casings-the mycellium has poked thrugh one spot-the only bad thing-about 1 inch away-it looks like cobweb mold-i sprayed it a little with h202-it hasnt started bad yet-and it started on top-it looked like little hairs-u know that shit u see on the ground sometime-LOL-anyway i dug under it a little and it didnt go down-it had started on top-
maybe its not even cobweb but mycellium-but i dont see how beacuse its not connected with any mycellium-guess time will tell-

its probably cobweb mold. how did you sterilize the substrate material?
i encountered the same kind of thing last casing, it was fiberious, whispy stands of what really looked like white hair.

I am new to this but that is my guess.

Cobweb is Gray. It's hard to tell but just look at it for a long time.

if you think its cobweb mold either get it out NOW or watch it take over your jar. it grows fast and ruthless; you must remove ALL of it so dig farther than you can visually see it. and remove it all the ist time or you will just lose even more substrate.
its usually not even worth trying to remove it; just chuck the jar and start anew.

Here is a pic of my experience with cobweb mold:


Mycelium looks white, fluffy, thick and solid, kinda like a wet marshmallow. Cobweb looks light and wispy like the pic. Or so it had been my experience so far.

If I am wrong at all I hope to be corrected in short order.

this looks more like tiny hairs-the h202 seems to have killed it whatever it was-:) hope it dont return-i used a microwave to sterlize my casing mix-
i have never had not 1 contam before(knock on wood)i run a hepa and im super clean-thanks to my wife bitchin about the house all the time :smile:
maybe it was just -hm-i dunno-

Not always, mine was defiantly white. I did just toss a jar with gray cobweb mold tho. :frown:

turns out-it was mycellium-LOL
i checked my jars last nite-there were a few jars that wasnt clean on the outside-they had cobweb mold on the outside of the jars-none are contaminated on the inside yet though-lol-lets just say i did a spring cleaning last nite for aboput 4 hours-

GaNjAShRooM, Be shure to spray the OUTSIDES of your jars with Lysol and it may be a good idea to clean and spray your incubation chamber before you open the jars or contams could get in. That pic of my cobweb is from contams on the outside of my jars that got in when I cracked the lid to dump the Co2. I lost 9 of 12 jars.

This is my experience with cobweb. Looking more greyish though, flash is off.

yeah dude thats not cobweb.  koos is right it is ussually gray.  once you see real cobweb you will know it, its kinda hard to confuse it with mycelium.  that is something else on that cake above, i bet it turns green!

now that is definatly cobweb MAIA!

i just got a big spot of cob on a casing of rye, i tryed to treat it yesterday but it came back.  today i scaped it off but i think it wil be back :frown:

ok-here to make it more clearer-my casing did not have cobweb mold-
the outside of my jars did-it looked like i had a spider living in my incobater,without the spider-LOL
i think i got it beofre it was in my jars-but im sitting them aside to make sure
they are 90% done-
gill just leave them be and maybe go invitro with them-
no way im gonna even take the chance of opening them around my other 40 or so jars-why waste 40 to save 6-LOL

pleezr: That cake is long gone. It was tossed about 6 hrs after the pic was taken. I then pulled the terrarium down and cleaned it all with hot soapy water, dried and hosed with Lysol. Day before yesterday (3-15) I was checking my jars and found the dreaded cobweb mold in one jar. It was gray for shure as discussed here. When I inoculated I flamed my needle every 2 jars so if it's from a dirty needle then it shouldn?t go too far. One other jar seemed to show a sign of green, I will look at it in a couple days and perhaps give it last rites.

On the plus side I have my first 3 cakes birthed and one has a pin! That?s right, don?t applaud, just throw money! It wasn?t there this morning but by god its there 9 hours later. Its 1/2" from the top of the cake on the side. It shot out a little and headed straight for the light, it's about 5/8" tall, B+ strain. They were inoculated on 2-9. Bout damn time!!

I think it would turn green, that white you have is more dense than cobweb... i've seen it before.
