mycellium in non-nutritious verm layer...
    #3353334 - 11/12/04 09:28 PM (12 years, 30 days ago)

my half-pint cakes are about 60% colonized (roughly), and it looks as though the mycellium is growing into the top layer of vermiculite. is this possible? i put about a half inch of verm for that layer, and some of the cakes are colonizing up to the lid it seems.

just wondering how abnormal this is...

did you wipe the edge of the jar before you put the verm on?

Sounds like strong healthy mycelium.

No worries.

if it looks like this, it may be cobweb
if its a brighter white its mycelium,
you can give it a week and you'll know because cobweb will have taken over

Prisoner's right, if it looks like cobb webb, then it will take over and u'll notice. O and mycelium can't grow in dry verm., but maybe water leaked in when you boiled them?Well, Gl

Most of the time, the growth through the verm layer is rhyzomorphic growth. If it looks like bright white roots growing out, you should be good. But if it's shady grey and streaky, be on the look out.

it's normal to colonise the verm.
