Colonized dry verm layer Please Resond Quickly
    #481091 - 12/05/01 08:18 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

My friend birthed one of his cakes and the mycellium colonized some of the dry verm layer. Will the mushrooms pin through the verm? Should he flip the the cake over so the dry verm is on the bottom? He wants to get the biggest yield he can. He has seen people putting jar lids underneath thier cakes. What is the point this? HE doesn't want to do that cause he doesn't want the lids to rust. He figured that all its doing is blocking the light and stopping the pins from forming there. He's wondering why this is good? why wouldn't you want pins there, and if a piece of tinfoil steralized wih alchohol will do the same thing.

yes, the pins will grow through dry verm.
what i did when I birthed my cake was to flip the jar upside down and gently scraped the dry verm from teh jar. Then just flipped it onto the lid. The lid can get keep the cake from resting right on top of the perlite layer many people use in terrariums which can lead to rotting cakes. I do believe they sell plastic lids though, which you could use to avoid the rusting problem.

My friends cakes are on 1/4 inch mesh above the perlite. the perlite isn't wet either, just there to wick up any water that accumulates at the bottom, and if needed to add some water to bring up the humidity, but the humidifier and bubbler are working great. When he birthed his cake he shook it to get the verm off, but a lot of it didn't come off. He gently tried to take it off with his finger (he was wearing latex gloves because he heard if you touch the cake without gloves it won't pin where it was touched) the dry verm is stuck on being held by the mycellium. He doesn't think he needs lids under the cakes for the reasons stated above. What do you think? Should he just leave the verm how it is?

funny you mention the verm. that's kind of 'stuck on' the bottom. I just birthed my first cake today and noticed the same thing. I just scraped off as much as I could with my gloved finger and plopped it right on top of it's lid. I believe the lid is just to keep the cake from sitting directly on the perlite; although if you had another way (wire) i think you're fine.Took the tape off the holes. I think if you were to just get off all the loose verm. and then place on top of the wire, you'll be fine. i think! =)
