PF Cake top verm layer
    #1239212 -

I birthed 5 straight PF jars last Friday. I read that the top dry verm layer (which wasn't so dry after I dunked the cakes) should be scraped off . . . I decided to leave it on (as half of the double ended casing tek). I thought that this would provide a little extra moisture for the cakes. There is a small amount of mycelium sticking up through the verm layers on each cake now. My question is should I remove the top verm layer? Please tell me what has been more beneficial to you in your experiences with cultivation. Thanks a lot!!

P.S. -- Oh yeah, they are in a rubbermaid terrarium which is inverted with perlite on the bottom . . . 75-76*F, 100% rH. I blacked out the sides of the terrarium (with a garbage bag, scissors, and tape) and they recieve anywhere from 2-8 hrs of light per day (depends how long I'm home each day). Thanks again!

Before birthing cakes I invert the jar and shake off the loose verm but I do not scrape any off. Like you said, the verm layer helps keep the cake hydrated.

I don't shake mine off. I just leave it on. I noticed that a lot of the shrooms will grow from there rather than right off the cake.

Thanks very much to both of you. I thought what I was doing was correct, I just wanted to make sure because no matter how much I read/research (a lot!), I'm still a newbie and reassurance from more experienced cultivators really sets my mind at ease. Thanks again!
