im all for free speech too mj, the article is the same with or without the persons name though. no need to make it personal, how would you like your name posted all over cause you screwed up your sophmore year in college, everyone makes mistakes, he obviously already did his time, let him move on and dont contribute to the stigma society attaches to drug use.

remove the name.

as far as it being in the cache of a search engine, that has nothing to do with anything. sooner or later, the search engine robot will come across mjshroomer's page and re-index it, omitting the name if it is no longer in the article. archive.org and other similar tools will present more of a problem, but not by much. the resource of these archiving websites are finite and they cannot afford to hang on to every bit and byte.

the fact that the same article including the name can be found elsewhere on the web is irrelevant. if every website operator behaved as childishly as mjshroomer, the internet would be a shitty place. the right thing to do is often the thing that, if everybody did it, would still be the right thing. in this case, the right thing to do would be to ommit the kid's name from your website.

the reasoning that the name should be left in so that people with questions concerning the law may question the arrested student does not hold up either. not only would you need to be able to identify and get in touch with the student, but he would have to be willing to help. he still has certain rights (not necessarily legally protected ones) to privacy and unless he agrees to be available to answer questions, he should not have to face unsolicited ones.

can you prove he is a narc? no? then don't go throwing around accusations or insinuations.

today would be shroomier for all of us if mjshroomer would listen to the shroomery community. which brings up the fact that the article with the fellow's name is on the shroomery. i believe the shroomery should clearly outline a policy governing personal information in posts. if the response here is any indication, the majority of shroomery members favor protecting privacy over providing every single detail in a news story. peace.
