Casing pan

I now have a doubt about the pans I have aquired for casing. First off Im going to be using whole grain rye as a substrate. And I plan to case with vermiculite. The doubt that I have now is that I think my pans are to shallow. They are only a little less then 2" deep, Is this sufficient enough. I have read that the substrate should be 2" alone with at least a 1" casing. Any help would be appriciated.

Why don't you get pans with different dimensions from Wal Mart or some other store around you? Between 1 1/2 - 3 inches of substrate is fine for a good flush from what I have read. You can try using those pound cake pans that are smaller but taller instead of those square-shaped ones. 1 inch for casing is right, too, I believe.
I believe in Mr. Grieves ! Also, everything in the above post is entirely fictional, like PC !

substrate and casing layers can be as deep as you want them to be. a thick substrate layer produces a larger flush. 1" for a casing layer is kinda thick- you may want to keep it around 1/4-1/2". they do sound more shallow than what HQ would personally use: she always gets them just a little too tall if need be- too tall isnt a problem :) also, if your pans are very large lxw, it may not be a problem as youll be using a lot of substrate.
