Well, I finally decided that I needed a pressure cooker, So I went and bought one, It was 20 bucks at Kmart (which I knew was to good to be true) but I got home and relized that It woulnd't fit 1 quart jars. I was planning on using Whole grain rye, and the only methods I have found call for 1 quart jars. I don't have a whole lot of cash, so Its kinda hard to find a descent one. Tomorrow Ill go to thrift stores and look around. Anybody else have any Ideas?

Couldn't you forget the pressure cooker and just boil the jars? I'm not sure, since you're using such large jars.

Unfortunatly no cause you need a pressure cooker to steralize the rye, From what I have read rye is really hard to steralize and requires a pressure cooker. Also the rye will absorb the water better, and gets steralized to its fullest extent.

My pressure cooker was about 30 bucks (i think, it was awhile ago) at walmart and it fits four 1 quart jars at one time. This makes for about 3 trips to the pressure cooker each time I'm planning on innoculating. I suggest, if you can, to take that one back and when you look for cooker sizes this time bring a 1 quart jar to size it. On the other hand, you could also just go to pint jars instead (if those fit) it'd be a hell of alot cheaper than buying a new pressure cooker if you can't take the too-small one back.
hope that helped out,
cheers,

Your lucky you found one for that price. if I were you, i'd switch to 1/2 pint jars. Most pressure cookers are not that cheap. Are you sure it can handle 15psi ?

Thanks for the Input everyone. Im not actually sure it can handle 15 PSI, I think it might be 10. Is 15 PSI a absolute must or can you just lengthen the amount of time they are in for? Thanks again everyone

I use pint jars(500ml).
100g rye and 105 g water per jar.
pc for 1 hour at 15psi.
you should try pcooking for 80 minutes at 10psi.

I got a small one for about $15. It's a fixed pressure of 10PSI. Psylocybe Fanaticus advises useing 12 psi. Is 10psi enough? If non pressure cooker sterilation works it would seem to me that this should work. Should one sterilize for more than 20 minutes at this pressure?

I would imagine you would have to cook it for longer than normal at a lower temp... If you figure out the ratio: 15psi for 45-60 minutes is ideal, so maybe 10psi would go for 70-90 minutes?
That would just be my educated (or uneducated) guess... It quite possibly may not work as easily as that, in which case you may have to get a pressure cooker equiped to deal with 15psi.
hope that helped
