the water in TiT doesn't need to be sterilized but I believe it would help the water from getting nasty as fast. Im more concerned with the water in the humidifiers than anything.

edit* I know it is unneccisary. I have never used any type of additive before and had no probs with contams whatsoever, but this is for a friend he wanted to know because he is worried. Would rather do overkill than nothing.

A cap full of bleach goes a long, long ways in keeping stagnant pools of water free from contams. Try it out.

Wouldn't spring water be better since it has less minerals and such? Never really used a humidifer but i'm sure they get mineral deposits all in them and F them up, but then again, ive never really used one  , Just a kind of noobie point i guess haha ok im out, gl

haha, ya, hard water is not good for them at all. I used purified water in all my humidifiers.

Ya, bleach isn't good for direct contact, but inside the TiT it wouldn't harm anything. I'm not sure about the smell, a capful shouldn't stink up the room, but
cant be used in the humidifiers.

I was referring to using it more for TiT then humidifier, but I don't see any reason it could hurt in a humidifier either.

Bleach is so powerful you could get away with using an extremely small ratio to water in your incubator, and still get the benefits of antibacterial action yet keeping bleach particles out of the air. For humidifier I would shoot for 1:50 or maybe a little higher then that.

Try iodaphor. It is an acidified iodine based sanatizer which is pretty cheap. One name brand is MikroKlen. Available though most homebrew supply stores.Mainly used in service/breweries/dairy industries. Also used in many restaurant dishwashers as a no rinse sanitizer.

How do you know, have you ran a humidifier with a minute concentration of bleach in it? I haven't, but I feel that it's worth trying.

O...Sorry about that

I put some bleach in my TiT, no smell unless u lift the top tub out, it's not slimy as it was when i used h202...infact it's not even slimy and it lasts for awhile...only neg. thing about it that i noticed was that the cord went from black to several shades lighter and that when you spill water u leave spots in the carpet :smirk:

But it works well with me, i think mines a 46qt,i just put a random amount, cuz im pimp like that Lol...:smirk:

Probably put less than a cup...and about like 3-5 inches of water on the bottom, not exactly sure, point is, it works

I say this because an ultrasonic humidifier's "mist" would then contain hypochlorite/water solution. I don't want a hypochlorite/water solution coming in contact with a casing that contains gormet mushroom cultures.

Commercial mushroom farms sometimes use a low concentration (<200 ppm) of bleach when they water. Or so I have read. IMO peroxide would be a better additive if one is concerned with health risks. I screwed up one of my ultrasonics by using it to "bleach bomb" my fruiting chamber. DO NOT add very much bleach at all or parts may corrode...

Iodine is used by homebrewers. It can be found at any beer/wine homebrew supply shop. It works really well for sanitation with fewer harmful side effects than bleach.
