The two best methods are Perlite and ShroomGod's. Both can be found under the Grow/Find section. Stay away from evaporative type humidifiers.

A valid concern. If you are only running the humidifier for short periods it should not be a problem. For longer periods it could be bad for the motor.

I'd recommend using a large diameter tube, you'll reduce the amount of time you need to need to run the humidifer, while at the same time reducing the back-pressure on the fan. The tubing will be cheaper than a new humidifer, why risk it?

Bacterial or fungal growth on the pad is generally not a problem, particularly if you are using distilled water, however, you may want to add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to the water. Bleach would work too, but use a very low concentration, 30:1 would probably be sufficent.

Stork, the evaporative type of humidifiers will not produce adequate humidity for mushrooms. They are designed to provide a comfortable human humidity range, around 50% relative humidity.

As for motor strain, I've been restricting my used Kaz cool mist humidifier for months now while it's running. It hasn't broken yet and this unit looks about eight years old or even more.

I'm telling ya, ultrasonics kick ass. I found a used one for $25.00 Canadian! (a large resevoired Holmes model). You tape off the output shoot and drill a hole into the plastic to run a piece of 5/8" hose into. Run this hose through a few 2L Coke bottles (to get rid of large water drops) and you get 95% + RH plus gas exchange. Most people don't have luck with these units becuase they usually output too much. The good ones have controls to reduce the density and volume and if there's still to much just put a 10K ohm (or larger, experiment) resistor in parallel with the volume potentiometer.
