Mine is a bigger model than that, still Vicks Cool Mist brand, the $40 one. It has different output, but yeah, everything is duct-taped except the hose outlet. I use 1/2 inner diameter hose. The hose is less than a foot long and goes into the top of my terrarium above the drip shield.

I run it 24/7 on the lowest setting. It usually keeps my hygrometer pegged at 99.9% RH, though it dips a bit when I open her up. I LOVE MY COOL MIST!!! First harvest coming this weekend :smile:

I had the same problem with that brand so I brought a different one. I can't leave the one on 24/7 or the humidity gets too low in the terrarium. I have to do 10-15 minutes max with cool mist--then put spray--then fan to get the CO2.

But everyone is different. Good luck.

I've never SEEN any trace of moisture with my hose. If you've seen an ultrasonic, a cool mist is a different critter. If I didn't have an expensive hygrometer to tell me that it was working perfectly, I'd swear it wasn't putting out any moisture at all. There is very little condensation in my terrarium and the level in my tank never seems to go anywhere. But I've got fruits, and they're starting to grow exponentially.

With Cool Mist, you can't go by what you see. You need a hygrometer. But they work very nicely. I've tried everything else, and this was the only solution for my 18-gallon. Hell, I wanna be the Cool Mist poster boy. I want my av slapped on the side of every Cool Mist sold.

I am having luck so far with my poor mans pod. My hygro goes up to 99 then pegs out and stays there. There is no visible signs of humidity though.

Dayyam, that's dreadfully low. Maybe an ultrasonic would work better for you, but that cuts back on the air flow. I assume you've read ShroomGod's Humidifier Tek:

I had bad problems with drops on my cakes with an ultrasonic, but any port in a storm. Christ, at 50-some-odd percent RH, I wouldn't be able to sleep. Get in there with a mist bottle and help those babies out, man.

BTW, ShroomGod recommends using a garden hose from the Cool Mist to the terrarium.

You didnt cover up the intake with tape did you? I have no experience with the cool mist but from what ive read you may have a problem with equipment. It is possible that the machine is not working well. Maybe the filter is clogged and you aren't getting enough fresh air in to create the humid exhaust. got pics of your buddies set up?

My observations:
The main goal of hooking a cool mist humidifier to a terrarium is air exchange.

Why not hook a normal 5 dollar computer fan then? Because it will blow dry air into the terrarium and dry it out.
So, we hook up a humidifier.

Now, don?t expect the humidified air to have anything near 100% rH, at least I never experienced it. But it has more than the outside air.

The humidity in the terrarium comes mainly from the casings and whatever you have in it that has water on the surface that can evaporate.
So, if I don?t have many casings in the terrarium, I put containers with wet perlite or similar to add to the evaporation.
Now you see why it?s important to spray the casings with water, so they don?t dry out while contributing to the moist climate in the terrarium.

Questions: YOu say you only reach 55% rH.
How humid is the air outside?
Is it 50%? Then your humidifier doesn?t work properly.

Is water in there? Does it spin? does it blow out moist air or water droplets when it?s not hooked up to the terrarium?

My friend is having a similar problem with a new terrarium. 55 gallon aquarium with a cool mist. Humidity is steady at 75%. Is this because there are no cakes in there yet? My friend is trying to get the setup ready before the cakes are done.

More ideal? I?m sure there is.
More Expensive and complicated? You bet!
As for the water leaking:
fist, close the original opening and make a second hole fitted with the hose.
second, put a tape around the perimeter of the humidifier where the 2 halves meet. If you have done this, there is no way for it to leak.

Enter, I understand your frustration bro as I think we have all been there. I also commend Anno for being so patient with this thread. So Enter, listen to Anno. He is telling you a perfect way to set up your terrarium. I use the exact same setup Anno is telling you to use except I only run my coolmist for 2mins every few hours.

I will try to answer some of your questions for you. First, lets be sure your talking about a terrarium (which is used for the fruiting cycle i.e air exchanges, Light, and lower temps.) or if your talking about a incubator( i.e higher temps and almost no air exchange and no light.)

You will only need to use a cool mist in a terrrarium not in an incubator. Now, I know shroomgod says to use a coolmist running for 24 hours a day but in my experience its hard to get the humidity up running it like that, and I don't know why one would want to. I'm happier running it a few minutes every couple hours. Advantages are its quieter, less refills, longer use of the coolmist. If your doing cakes, I would not use a coolmist alone. Use the perlite tek for humidification and use the coolmist to do your air exchanges for you. If your doing casings, use your coolmist for air exchanges and mist your casing once a day to make sure it doesn't dry out. Your casing layer will evaporate enough water to keep the humidity high enough in your terr. so you don't need anything else for humidity. Also, your moist casing layer will protect your substrate from drying out. Your cakes will not have this advantage which is why the higher humidity is needed with cakes via the perlite tek.

IS the terrarium somehow open? Or is it closed?
What kind of the walls does it have, permeable?
If they are permeable, depending on the material used, it might be difficult to sustain high levels of moisture.
If you read my Antonius thread, you?ll see that I applied some plastics to the walls, because I had difficult sustaining high humidity levels in the winter. Perhaps you should try something similar.

This has been a very helpful thread... Thanks for the questions Enter and the answers Thrice and (as always) Anno

PAt has put together a very simple Sterlite Terr with a clear top that has a V400 Vick's Cool Mist attached with a 12" hose taped at both ends. There is a tray of perlite with a double hosed air pumped circulating the water. The air pump is in the terr so there is no fresh air introduced.

The results are encouraging. She has no cakes/casing in the terr yet but the humidity is stable at 90% without fanning or misting. She has run the Cool Mist sparingly since she is simply testing the setup while waiting for the jars to fully colonize. I have learned a lot from this thread and again... thanks

Anyone have your cool mist turn from a machine that makes a nice trickling water sound to one that hums terribly? Mine has done this and it's driving me crazy and was wondering if anyone knew what causes this.

Yes. That's the "machine is fucked" noise. Hit it repeatedly with a heavy object, that should fix it.
