I don't know if death is preferable. all I know is life is a miracle in all its complexity and multiplicity. and that currently life takes its meaning on death. maybe eternal life would be ok. maybe that's the reason our universe is ever expanding, so as to provide room for more and more living beings. what I really was aiming at is at what all this implies on a theological level. all our religions are based on life beyond death, on heavens and hells. what would be there role in an eternal life society?

I think the meaning of life is to create more life.

Oh man, I can't believe that nobody mentioned this.

What about the fact that, if we have the technology to enhance our bodies and our minds, and let us live forever, our concerns will CHANGE. If we have a way to increase our intelligence, then who knows what desires or problems humans will face? Think about this - while on a psychedelic, you look at things very differently. What if your intelligence was increased to a point where you realized that death is a waste? What if...I can't even guess! Who KNOWS what kinds of consciousness could evolve from a transhumanist type implant.

Increased intelligence changes priorities, it changes problems, it changes how you think. We are discussing this problem through a standard human brain, limited to our current problems and our current methods of thinking about things. All the physicists preceeding Einstein would never have thought up General Relativity. It took a special mind, with a special intelligence to come up with something so unique. If we were all that intelligent, things would change and perhaps death wouldn't even be an issue or a desire. It would just become something people take for granted, like a disease. It wouldn't have to be envied or inevitable because we could look at it through a whole new human mindset.

No. He is using the fruits of human intelligence to better his position. How is that any different from any of the tools we use to make our lives "better"?

The difference lies in the fact that you would not be doing any math yourself. The chip would do it all for you, whereas the hunter still has to be able to aim, and to use his own force to own the beast.

I'm responding from the angle of what is best, in my judgement, to improve our quality of life. Happiness at your OWN accomplishments is an integral part of that.

I myself take death for granted. That might be because I'm 22 and not close to my deadline. And I have no desire to live forever. What's the point?

Good point, but you can only view it as opening up more possiblities to do things for yourself. Imagine a mathematical genius with this chip implanted in his brain, the coupling of the two forces(chip+math skills) could give him the ability to solve advanced problems that couldn't be tackled before.

Also, the development of the chip takes ingenuity of the people who are pursuing the technology, that in itself is an accomplishment.

in any distinct ways? create we life, we create energy? getting something out of nothing? i guess I'm asking, could creating life, create life? any more than it do?

The point is, if you were able to live forever then death would no longer have a priority. Why would you even think about it at all? Out of sight, out of mind.
