Global Consciousness Project
    #3781643 - 02/15/05 02:04 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

id read the article here first for the summery: http://www.rednova.com/news/display/?id=126649#121
and then the projects website: http://noosphere.princeton.edu/

DEEP in the basement of a dusty university library in Edinburgh lies a small black box, roughly the size of two cigarette packets side by side, that churns out random numbers in an endless stream.

At first glance it is an unremarkable piece of equipment. Encased in metal, it contains at its heart a microchip no more complex than the ones found in modern pocket calculators.

But, according to a growing band of top scientists, this box has quite extraordinary powers. It is, they claim, the 'eye' of a machine that appears capable of peering into the future and predicting major world events.
...
'Very often paranormal phenomena evaporate if you study them for long enough,' says physicist Dick Bierman of the University of Amsterdam. 'But this is not happening with the Global Consciousness Project. The effect is real. The only dispute is about what it means.' The project has its roots in the extraordinary work of Professor Robert Jahn of Princeton University during the late 1970s. He was one of the first modern scientists to take paranormal phenomena seriously. Intrigued by such things as telepathy, telekinesis - the supposed psychic power to move objects without the use of physical force - and extrasensory perception, he was determined to study the phenomena using the most up-to-date technology available.

So does this sound familiar? The effect they are measuring is essentially McKenna's Timewave Zero, changes in the global consciousness. If you have the time its really worth the read because this could have massive implications on reality as we know it.

This is thread number who knows what about this... Two in the pub, one in S&P, and another one in here labelled time?.

Anyway, for the millionth time... I've begun work on my own REG.

Next step is REGd which will run on one of my boxes constantly with time data correlating to each result set and some nice graphs and such of the results, and we'll see just what happens.

With that version there, you can try and influence it over the wire if you want... Best yet is Annom with 19% difference in heads and tails (though that is the highest I have seen it do on its own; I will be impressed when someone manages 65% or better twice in a row).

unless you have a solid-state random num gen that uses quantum-tunneling in diodes or transistors to generate white noise, chances are its not going to work the same way as the egg tests show. A random num gen for a computer i would suspect wouldnt be able to retain the information across time-eddys. And also most 'random number' gens for computers really arent exactly random.

No, I haven't gotten that far yet, just writing the surrounding software (that's my job, anyway - you want to build me the hardware?); especially analysis and display of the data.

By definition of randomness, no other device (or software) generating randomness is going to work THE SAME WAY as the egg tests; that's part of the whole random thing.

Yes, generally, computers use a psuedo random number generator with seeded random number values; but that's back in CS1. There's lots of research, effort, and experience put together to generate more truly random randomizations using computers.

i think that as long as the device is influenced by TIME, it cannot create the desired see-through-time effects.

It's all dependent on time, in a way.  The claim is four hours before 9/11, things went off...  Time is involved here.

But there's many alternative options; pull data from the lower and upper ends of RAM, for starters...  Whitenoise from random devices...  So on and so forth.

i dont think you quite understand how time dependant that is. quantum tunneling white noise however is truely random and completely unreliant on time in any aspect of extracting the wave's amplitude.

> But there's many alternative options; pull data from the lower and upper ends of RAM, for starters... Whitenoise from random devices... So on and so forth

This is the type of thinking that leads to extremly non-random sequences. Using your example, for example: low memory on a PC (real mode) contains the interrupt vector table which will be almost identical every single time you boot the computer. Using the upper pages of memory contain mappings into BIOS, which again will be almost identical every single time you boot your computer.

Generating a truely random sequence is extremly difficult. There are methods, such as using radioactive decay, or watching what state a transistor ends up end after being placed into a quasi-stable state, etc, to generate truely random number sequences.

On the lower range, I'm talking about memory the OS has heaped together; on the upper range, I am talking about currently unallocated memory which, even if you hit the same spot, it will be different each time...  And I'm not talking about just using the data directly, but rather a much more complicated and convoluted process, using it like making a hash key and such.

Besides, discounting the link I gave, it was just illustrating there are OTHER ways and means, not that I was actually meaning to do so nor advocating the use of those particular methods, thus the "so on and so forth"

You might create a pretty successful random # generator for todays security needs, but it still wont be random, no matter how many filters you put it through

Quit bitching about the randomness or lack thereof of my methods and BUILD ME THE FUCKING BOX

In the meantime, these are the methods I am using to write surrounding software.

I'm just saying we've well established computers use psuedo random numbers

> Then I'll be using pseudorandomnumbers in my REGd and related projects until then

A pseudorandom number sequence generator is simply a function that produces number sequences that statistically appear to be random. The function will produce the same sequence every single time. If you are playing with 'global consciousness', then there will be no way to measure the effect unless you use a true purely random number sequence generator. Even if one can change the outcome of chance, one cannot change the outcome of a function.

> Quit bitching about the randomness or lack thereof of my methods

Not bitching about your methods, or lack there of... but about how people in general have a large misunderstanding of random and statistics... This is why casinos and lotteries are so profitable... if people understood the science behind them, they would seldom play.

(Just for the record, as tone doesn't travel well over the internet, I mean my quit bitchin' comments most hilariously)

Quote:

This is slightly misleading, too, though. The function will produce the same sequence of numbers between 0 and 1 for a given seed, every time... So assuming it is seeded based on only time, you will have to run it at the EXACT (well, not so exact with some RNGs) same time in order to get the EXACT same results.

As far as slot machines and such... I'll never play them until they're open source because I have had some suspicions of them for a long time and some of those links in other thread help harden those suspicions.

> This is slightly misleading, too, though.

Not at all. A math function will return the same value every single time given the same inputs, by definition. The "seed" is basically an offset into the sequence. Also, using "time" as a "seed" also tends to produce small groupings of pseudo-random sequences in practice.

Slot machines are always running through the random number sequence. The true randomness is created when the user hits the button, selecting a number from the pseudo-random sequence, which is a non-deterministic event.
