yea, ive know alot of bands to progressivly change as the matured. TOOL is a very popular rock band with a cult following and their latest cd is very different from their earlier ones.

i think all the good bands got old. 80-85 is an awesome punk album... but new BR isn't as good.

The new stuff just isnt as good. By new stuff I mean from the good bands. NOFX was cool on the White Man EP and Ribbed... S&M Airlines was cool two... anything after SLATFATS is worthless.

I wouldn't say so. Yes, The Sex Pistols were a manufactured band, but punk predated them. Punk came from the U.S. and was accepting of any sound - it was a do your own musical thing mentality (there was no 'punk' sound or style). Bands such as The New York Dolls, CBGB's, The Stooges, and Velvet Underground led the way, Malcom McLaren saw the marketing opportunity and then the Sex Pistols were born. The rest is history (actually that other stuff is history too).

back in the day punk was about DIY. the people that started the genre did so because they didn't like the music that was on the scene already so they did it themselves and made their own music. they said fuck no to disco, put their leather jackets on and their fists in the air. it wasn't only the music, it was the attitude. the fuck you attitude. yeah, now a days kids still have that attitude but, then when its all said and done they go back home and kiss mommy goodnight. the real punks that said fuck you slept in the gutter. really when it comes down to it, punk is immature music. its all ra ra ra. how long can u listen to the same three power cords? its just a phase. i went through it, a bunch of my friends did too but we all moved on. think. how many 40 year old punks do u know? punk is great for a while... then its time to move on to bigger and better things.

by the way, punk is dead. its just not the same. no ones doin anything new. alot of old school punks would agree with me. but i'll always hold a special place in my heart for rancid. man i loved rancid. good times.

That's just a short period of time though, and those bands were kind of borderline punk, (plus you could pretty easily trace punk back a lot further than that, with bands like the Trashmen and whatnot) my point is that there was never a time when punk was some pure thing that has now been corrupted, it's always just been some genre of music, and an extremely malleable one at that.

I'd say that there was a punk sound and style though... it's pretty hard to say that there wasn't a similarity between the various CBGB bands. Perhaps not as obvious as comparing Sum 41 and Blink 182, but it's there.

Also, saying that punk is more DIY than other genres of music is kind of silly. How is getting together and starting your own punk band different frog getting together and starting your own blues band, or rock 'n roll bank, or buying a set of turntables?

That's not to say that even sellout bands can't be great too. The Sex Pistols made great music, and so did the Stooges... even the pop punk bands of today occasionally make some good music.

You're obviously the type of person who judges music by image instead of sound.

Most crappy pop music is just that, but when there are literally hundreds of bands writing music in a certain genre, it's pretty close to impossible for a few good songs not to come out of it.

Yes. I agree with you for the most part. I haven't heard much good country, or pop punk, and I don't really listen to them, but I'm not such a douchebag that I'm not willing to accept that there are probably some good musicians somewhere within each genre.

i don't think its silly at all. the whole style of music was made specifically because they didn't like anything else that was out there. its not a progression from other genres like rock was a conituation of blues. punk was a hell of alot more DIY than other types of music. they made their own clothes for god sakes. they improvised for everything, partly for style and partly because they were poor and couldn't afford other shit. your right about the starting a punk band now a days is no different than anything esle. the difference is that when punk was punk there was a huge element of DIY more so then any other style i can think of. its not that other styles couldn't have an element of DIY, its that the DIY attitude was a huge part of the punk attitude. simply put, punk wouldn't have been punk without the DIY mentality.
