Cow Punk and Psychobilly appreciation thread?

This thread is for comments about Cow Punk and Psychobilly bands and musicians (i.e. Mike Ness, Reverend Horton Heat, et al). We will also accept comments about older cow folk who have abused mass drugs, seen many hard miles and share these kind of views and attitudes towards life (i.e. Johnny Cash, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Neil Young, et al).
I?ll start. Here?s a great fucking song by Mike Ness. Mike Ness is arguably one of the angriest voices in rock -- great music for detox rage! Anyway, great lyrics from an old junkie and a stellar title!!!
Cheating at Solitaire By Mike Ness
You can lie to yourself, you can lie to the world You can lie to the one you call your girl You can humble yourself to the hearts that you stole Wondering who's gonna love you when you grow old?
With a fistful of courage and a heart full of rage I realized I'd locked myself in a cage I'll be the one standing there with the watery eyes I'll be the fool in the mirror asking you why, asking why
When I got to the end of my dirty rainbow And I found that there was no pot of gold Well, I learned that I was empty and not quite as strong For I had robbed my heart and cheated my soul
Look for the one with the watery eyes I'll be the fool in the mirror asking you why Cursing lovers in a warm tender embrace Scoffing at the world and the whole human race
Chorus: You can run, you can hide You can feed your foolish pride You can use and abuse In the end you'll always lose at the game
Solo:
Chorus: You can run, you can hide You can feed your foolish pride With the hearts that you stole And an empty pot of gold And the lover's warm embrace And the whole damned human race You can use and abuse In the end you'll always lose at the game
"For I cheated myself at solitaire."

On the Road Again By Willie Nelson
On the road again Just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is makin' music with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again Goin' places that I've never been Seein' things that I may never see again, And I can't wait to get on the road again.
On the road again Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway We're the best of friends Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way Is...
On the road again Just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is makin' music with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway We're the best of friends Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way Is...
On the road again Just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is makin' music with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again
And I can't wait to get on the road again

Yeah, Willie is cool!
Dope Fiend Blues Mike Ness
In a police car I feel so very small I see my lover's face and I watch her teardrops fall And I try to figure out where I'd fallen off the track I sold my soul to the devil and then I stole it back
Chorus And in the end, you know a dope fiend ain't got no friends And a junkie is a junkie to the bitter end Hope to die now, cuz you know I'm better off dead Hey brother, won't you lend me a helpin' hand?
I tie myself off, shoot it in my veins I feel like Marlon Brando and I've hid another day's pain I'm goin' back where it's safe, goin' back to the womb I find my mother's comfort, here in a needle and spoon
Chorus And Christmas for a dope fiend ain't no fun Waitin' for good times that seem to never come Goin' out now, gonna get myself a gun Please stop me, don't you know I'm on a run?
Aren't you tired of the detox and the places in the mind? Aren't you tired of the misery, aren't you tired of doin' time? And I try to figure out where I'd fallen off the track You know I sold my soul to the devil and then I stole it back
Chorus I'm a dope fiend, I'm a liar, a cheat and a thief At my funeral, won't you bring me a red rose wreath? Dress in black now, show everyone your grief Well, I'm gone now, you can all feel relief!

Remember Me By Willie Nelson (Scott Wiseman)
You told me once that you were mine alone forever And I was yours till the end of eternity. But all those vows are broken now, and we will never Be the same except in memory.
Remember me when the candle lights are gleaming, Remember me at the close of a long, long day. It would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreaming Just to know you still remember me.
A brighter face may take my place when we're apart, dear, Another love, with a heart more bold and free. But in the end, fair weather friends may break your heart, dear. If they do, sweetheart, remember me.
Remember me when the candle lights are gleaming, Remember me at the close of a long, long day. It would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreaming Just to know you still remember me.

After the Goldrush Neil Young
Well, I dreamed I saw the knights In armor coming, Saying something about a queen. There were peasants singing and Drummers drumming And the archer split the tree. There was a fanfare blowing To the sun That was floating on the breeze. Look at Mother Nature on the run In the nineteen seventies. Look at Mother Nature on the run In the nineteen seventies.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high. I was thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping it was a lie. Thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping it was a lie.
Well, I dreamed I saw the silver Space ships flying In the yellow haze of the sun, There were children crying And colors flying All around the chosen ones. All in a dream, all in a dream The loading had begun. They were flying Mother Nature's Silver seed to a new home in the sun. Flying Mother Nature's Silver seed to a new home.

The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song) By George Jones
I stopped off at the quicksack for some beer and cigarettes This old man took my money as he stared at my Corvette He said, I had one just like her son, a 1963 Til' the man down at the bank took her from me
Oh she was hotter than a two dollar pistol she was the fastest thing around Long and lean every young man's dream She turned every head in town She was built in from the handles Son, I'm glad that you dropped in She reminds me of the one I loved back then
Well I handed him my keys and said, here take her for a spin The old man scratched his head, and then he looked at me and grinned He said son you just don't understand it ain't the car I want It's the brunette in your vette that turns me on
I had one that was hotter than a two dollar pistol she was the fastest thing around Long and lean every young man's dream She turned every head in town She was built in from the handles Son, I'm glad that you dropped in She reminds me of the one I loved back then

OL' 55' Tom Waits
Well my time went so quickly I went lickety-splitly Out to my ol' fifty-five As I pulled away slowly feelin' so holy God knows I was feelin' alive.
And now the sun's comin' up I'm ridin' with Lady Luck Freeway cars and trucks Stars beginning to fade And I lead the parade Just a-wishin' I'd stayed a little longer Lord don't you know the feelin's gettin' stronger.
Six in the mornin' gave me no warnin' I had to be on my way. Now the cars are all passin' me, trucks are all flashin' me I'm headed home from your place.
And now the sun's comin' up I'm ridin' with Lady Luck Freeway cars and trucks Stars beginning to fade And I lead the parade Just a-wishin' I'd stayed a little longer Lord don't you know the feelin's gettin' stronger.

Cocaine Blues By Johnny Cash
Early one morning while makin' the rounds, I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down, I went right home and I went to bed, I stuck a lovin' forty-four beneath my head.
Got up next morning and I grabbed that gun, I took a shot of cocaine and away I run, made a good run but I run too slow, they overtook me down in Juarez Mexico.
Late n the hot joint takin' the pill, inwalked the sheriff from Jericho Hill. He said, ?Willy Lee your name is not Jack Brown, you're the dirty hack that shot your woman down?.
Oh yes, o yes, my name's is Billy Lee, if you've got a warrant just a - read it to me, I shot her down because she made me sore, I thought I was her daddy but she had five more.
When I was arrested I was dressed in black, they put me on a train and they took me back, had no friend for to go my bail, they stuck my dried-up carcass in the county jail.
Early next morning 'bout at half past nine, I saw the sheriff comin' down the line, that sheriff yelled as he cleared his throat, he said, ?Come on you dirty hack into the district court.
Into the courtroom my trial began, where I was handled by twelve honest men. Just before the jury started out, I saw that little judge commence to look about.
In about five minutes in walked a man, holding the verdict in his right hand, the verdict read ?In the first degree?, I hollered Lordy Lordy, have mercy on me.
The judge he smiled as he picked up his pen, ninety-nine years in the Folsom Penn, ninety-nine years underneath that ground, I can't forget that day I shot that bad bitch down.
Come on you gotta listen on to me, stay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be.

Della and the Dealer By Hoyt Axton
It was Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake And a cat named Kalamazoo. Left the city in a pick up truck, Gonna make some dreams come true.
Yea,they rolled out west where the wild sun sets And the coyote bays at the moon. Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake and a cat named Kalamazoo
Chorus: If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well But the cat was cool, and he never said a mumblin word.
Down Tucson way there's a small cafe Where they play a little cowboy tune. And the guitar picker was a friend of mine By the name of Randy Boone.
Yea, Randy played her a sweet love song And Della got a fire in her eye The Dealer had a knife and the dog had a gun and the cat had a shot of Rye.
Repeat CHORUS
Yea , the dealer was a killer, He was evil and mean And he was jealous of the fire in her eyes.
He snorted his coke through a century note And swore that Boone would die.
The stage was set when the lights went out. There was death in Tucson town. Two shadows ran for the bar back door And one stayed on the ground
Repeat CHORUS
Two shadows ran from the bar that night And dog and cat ran too. And the tires got hot on the pick up truck As down the road they flew.
It was Della and her lover and a dog named Jake And a cat named Kalamazoo. Left Tucson in a pick-up truck Gonna make some dreams come true.
CHORUS

Family Tradition By Hank Williams Jr.
country music singers have always been a real close family but lately some of my kin folks have disowned a few others and me i guess its because i kinda changed my direction i guess i went and broke the family tradition
they get on me wanna know Hank why do you drink? (Hank) why do you roll smoke? Why must you live out the songs that you wrote? over and over everybody made my prediction so if i get stoned I'm just carryin' on an old family tradition
I am very proud of my daddys name although his kinda music and mine ain't exactly the same stop and think it over put yourself in my position if i get stoned and sing all night long it's a family tradition
Don't ask me Hank why do you drink? (Hank) why do you roll smoke? Why must you live out the songs that you wrote? If I'm down in a Honky-Tonk Some ol' slicks tryin to give me corrections I'll say leave me alone I'm singin all night long it's a family tradition
Lordy, I have loved some ladies and I have loved Jim Beam and they both tried to kill me in 1973 when that doctor asked me Son how did you get in this condition I said hey sawbones I'm just carryin on an old family tradition
So don't ask me Hank why do you drink? (Hank) why do you roll smoke? Why must you live out the songs you wrote? Stop and think it over Try and put yourself in my unique position If I get stoned and sing all night long It's a family tradition!

/me says "listen to Sixer" over and over and over...
Actually I recommend Brassknuckle Boys, crappy name, but its the greatest mix of country and punk. The lead singer was a skinhead back in the 80's, and he's lived thru so much shit and it comes out in his music. "At Least it Seems" is about his life and all his friends, the heroin junkies, the old friends that are either dead or in prison, and that he was even part of the nazi skinhead (aka boneheads) scene in Chicago for a while (yes he reformed). They only released a 7 inch, a full length, and I have their demo somewhere...but definately pick of their full length "American Bastard" if you like that sing-a-long and country-ish kinda punk. I'll post the lyrics to "At Least it Seems" later. They are an amazing band, one of the only "true" punk bands, and they broke up last year. They also do a badass cover of "Sunday Mornin Comin Down" on American Bastard.
Here's a really short bio on the band...the only one I could find actually.
The Brassknuckle Boys are no longer a band. The Brassknuckle Boys were a street punk band from Lafayette, Indiana. The range in age in the band spans 10 years, from guys who've only just discovered street punk over the past couple years, to those who were in boots & shaved heads in '88. All the musicians in the band had been playing music since they were kids. The two youngest that were in the band have been in punk bands together since jr high school. The singer of the brassknuckle boys writes lyrics that are insightful and true. He left home at 14 years old and followed a trail that took him all over the country. 14 years later he's seen the white power movement and prison from the inside and came out of it with a better understanding of the world. The Brassknuckle Boys were a very young band, that had just formed in feb. of '99.

That's a great song. I think I'll have to find their badass version...
Mike Ness and Social Distortion did a great cover of this song, back in the day...
Ring of Fire Johnny Cash
Love is a burnin?thing, And it makes a fiery ring Bound by wild desire -- I fell into a ring of fire.
I fell into a burnin?ring of fire -- I went down, down, down And the flames went higher, And it burns, burn, burns, The ring of fir, the ring of fire.
The taste of love is sweet When hearts like ours meet. I fell for you like a child -- Oh, but the fire ran wild.
I fell into a burnin?ring of fire -- I went down, down, down And the flames went higher, And it burns, burn, burns, The ring of fir, the ring of fire.
I fell into a burnin?ring of fire -- I went down, down, down, And the flames went higher, And it burns, burn, burns, The ring of fir, the ring of fire. The ring of fire (and Fade)

I remember Social Distortion's version. Good stuff. Johnny Cash is one my favorite musicians.
Papaver, if you want some Brassknuckle Boys, I'd be happy to send you some mp3's somehow. It'll have to be tomorrow (my 'net connection at home is fucked, so I gotta do it at work.) I can put em on Kazaa or somethin. Cuz I don't think you'll have much luck doing searches for em. But yeah, tomorrow, just do a search on Kazaa for em, I'll have a bunch online.

WOMEN WITHOUT WHISKEY (Cooley / Drive By Truckers)
If I make it through this year, I think I'm gonna put this bottle down Maybe as time goes on I'll learn to miss it less than I do now Think I'm gonna tell her that I'm gonna go away for a while Till I can get this demon out
You know the bottle ain't to blame and I ain't trying to It don't make you do a thing it just lets you When I'm six feet underground, I'll need a drink or two And I'll sure miss you
Take me piece by piece till there ain't nothing left worth taking away from me
The highway's humming in my head and it's hard to hear Won't you read my lips if I pull you near enough Could you read my fortune in the bottem of this coffee cup Tell me how to tell when I've had enough
If morning's a bitch with open arms and night's a girl who's gone to far Whiskey is harder to keep than a woman and it's half as sweet but Women without whiskey, Women without whiskey Whiskey is hard to beat Whiskey is hard to beat

I had forgotten all about the progenitors of psychobilly -- the band X from the LA punk scene back in the early eighties. My recent move has caused a sort of upheaval in the geology of my CD collection, and ancient strata of music have been brought to the surface and exposed to the light. My collection of X CDs being among them?
Exene was cute as a button. John Doe was the epitome of cool, and Billy Zoom, forget about it, that guy was a nut -- the way he would just stand there, near motionless and smiling, while knocking off all these great rockabilly licks on the guitar!
The Hungry Wolf by John Doe & Exene Cervenka
I am the hungry wolf And run endlessly with my mate I see the gutter feed on the foolish Outrun and kill the strong At daybreak I roam awake to who follows me I roam I roam
I am the hungry wolf And run endlessly with my mate Welcome to the dripping jaws The alter of your death At daybreak I roam ready to tear up the world I roam I roam
The hungry wolf stares from the hill At the villagers around the fire She loves her mate as he loves her And they live together for life
I am the hungry wolf And run endlessly with my mate Look across the street, my friend We?re waiting for you to slow down At daybreak I roam eyes in the back of my head I roam I roam

The one and the same! He's put out some great solo efforts. The first one is probably my favorite. Although, his second album was mostly a cover album of old country songs and was also excellent!

Ain't You Been a Cowboy for Too Long? by The Ex-Husbands All those places in the hills you used to hide out are disappearing faster than a summer sqwall and your saddle and you boots are worn and dried out but somehow you still ride your pony tall
You can rope, ride and brand don't take your hat off for no man Don't you have a need to have a home? You gotta silver-plated six-gun if God help you, you should need one Ain't you been a cowboy for too long?
All those women that you've loved have settled down and married men with steady jobs in town They don't want no cowboys coming 'round Like the coyote and the (?) you're forced to beg or driven out Don't them fences make it hard to roam? Like everything that's wild and free you're loved and feared and not let be Ain't you been a cowboy for too long?
Your compadres now, all are dead or dyin' woven in the cloth of history Somehow my friend you managed to keep ridin' I don't guess it's how it used to be You can rope, ride and brand don't take your hat off for no man Don't you have a need to have a home?
You've gotta a silver-plated six-gun If God help you, you should need one Ain't you been a cowboy for too long?
(chorus)
Sorry, I don't know what he says on all the lyrics. The Ex-Husbands are a kick-ass honky-tonk country band outta NYC!

I wish I was a baller,
I wish I had a girl who looked good
I would call her
I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat

...but not quite as great as:
BIKINI GIRLS WITH MACHINE GUNS (Cramps)
i been a drag racer on LSD, and i rode bare-assed on top of the shpinx, i even had a gorilla on the slopes of kismet, and man, that was fun for a while you bet but...
bikini girls with machine guns, bikini girls with machine guns, that stuff will kill ya, it's loaded with fun, bikini girls with machine guns
well i savored many foriegn kinds of delicacies, intoxicated til i can't tell what the hell i could see, had all the violence and liquor within close reach, but all bars, pills and threeways lead me back to the beach and...
bikini girls with machine guns, bikini girls with machine guns, that stuff will kill ya, it's loaded with fun, bikini girls with machine guns
now they say that virtue is it's own reward, but when that surf comes in i'm gunna get my board, got my own ideas about the righteous kick, you can keep the rewards, i'd just as soon stay sick...

bah...I've been searching for hours for some Country Teasers lyrics for this thread all to no avail. Woulda been easier to sit down and figure some out by ear. Now it's three in the AM and I are fugged. So onto another intellectual dissertation from the Cramps (but check out some Country Teasers anyway if you get the chance):
Let's Get F*cked Up
Let's get fucked up. Let's get fucked up. Let's do some stuff. And get fucked up. Tomorrow we'll feel like we was hit by a truck. Let's get fucked up.
Goin' to a cockfight. Burn with, burn. All my stuff in shock might. Never ever return. Goin' to the brink of Oblivion. Gonna need a shrink to get again. Let's get fucked up...
Gonna get lowdown.Gonna get keyed up. Gonna go to town and get beat up. Gonna get way out. Gonna hit flameout. When my head caves in. Slip on nocturnal shades. Go down to amateur night. Do some purple haze. Probably lose some fight. Get cool and casual. Get really sent. Dig some cruel and unusual punishment. Let's get fucked up...

The Cramps! They were cool!
I had almost forgotten all about them! They're still on vinyl in storage somewhere, as I never got around to getting CD versions of their stuff...
/me goes to find some Cramps stuff on-line...
