How did you get into the Dead?
    #2434093 - 03/15/04 10:11 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So let's share stories! I, myself, am quite a latecomer to the Dead. Being born in 1985, I missed out on their hey-days (I was only 10 when Jerry died  :frown: ). I first heard of the Dead at a quite young age... my father (who imigratated to the US in the late 70s from India) was telling me a story about when he and my mom (who is born and bred in the midwest) were driving through Maine to visit relatives. I guess there was a Dead show nearby, because the highway was backed up, and lots of Deadheads were standing out in the streets (maybe dancing... dancing dancing in the Streets!) My dad was very confused, and asked my mom "who are these people?" So she explained to him about the Grateful Dead, and about how they have a huge fanbase that tours around with them, living on the road, etc. Being a very "spiritual" person, my dad found this quite interesting... it was the first time in the West that he had seen people living outside of the "material pleasures" spectrum of life. He later told me this whole story, I think when I was about 12 or 13... I had a cousin (suprisingly enough also half indian-half american) who was quite a "phish-head"... she came to visit us for a day or two while taking a break from some summer tour, and my dad shared this story with us.

I went through many periods of music-taste throughout my middle school and high school years, starting off as a punk-rocker-skateboarding-guy... then I learned to play guitar and soon gave up on punk... it was too simple and monotonous for me. So, I got into jazz quite a lot. At the same time I was first experimenting with acid and mushrooms, and so of course bought a few Pink Floyd albums. Then, perhaps 1 and a half years ago, my friends roomate played some Dead for me. I had heard them a few months earlier, a friends father had lent me some "best of" cd thinking I might like it... I did, but it didn't really catch my ear so much. But one evening, quite out of my head thanks to some "fun guy" I ran across, I listened to the first jam I had ever heard (it was Scarlet -> Fire from May 77 at Cornell)... and it blew me away. Not just because of my mind state, but because it was a great mix between the jazz and fusion I had been digging and straight rock and roll. I had been exposed a bit to the "jam" genre before this, and was already a big fan of MMW. But the Dead were something much more, to me, because I could not only entertain my musical ear, but my dancing feet as well. Since then, I've been hooked... I'm only really sad that I never got to see them (well I saw "the Dead" this summer, which was great, but still not the same).

So how did you first hear about or hear the Grateful Dead?

:gd_icon::heartpump:

Bought Shakedown Street @ Kmart for like $2 when I was 15. Completely changed my outlook on music. Never went to a show, though :crying:.

good story, nice nice. im not a deadhead so i guess my answer is the same as runDMT.  i was a phishhead for awhile so i'll tell that story...

started out me bein a freshman in high school way back in 1993 and listening to shit like styx and allman bros. band and the like.  my best friend at the time's brother was a senior, ohhh a senior, and he had this tape he was ranting about, it was a tape of phish's junta.  so we listened to that shit as we cruised down a 2 lane state highway in a 1979 dodge velari surrounded by cornfields on a sunny summer's day, and i was amazed, i was also a big jazz fan at the time so i was especially impressed to hear this jazz-rock fusion only without the "fusion".  that and their sheer musical talent esp. with improvisation got me hooked.  before i really got burnt on them, I saw them like 5 times I think, about two of which were at alpine valley in Wisconsin  with that big fucking slope that when you dance you keep feelin like ur about to fall on ur face.

As far as the dead, I had their album "skeletons in the closet" for awhile and liked it but I never really went nuts for them like i did for phish.  I dont know why, i guess i just figured that dead = yesterday and phish = today, like the dead already had their hayday and phish was still goin thru it.

I hope you enjoyed my story, next is chapter 2, how i became a househead...

I'm a young dead head. But I read the Electric Kool aid acid test a little over a year ago. I dug what the book was about and the whole scene and started by downloading some acid tests and it mushroomed from there.

well i had been listening to pink floyd and the like since i was like 3...never understood it but they were aqlways my fav. I always knew about the grateful dead but i never really caught on untill i went through my punk phase and started smoking pot and becoming big into the counter-culture. From then i became a member here and started frequenting the pub and listened to chinacat and started becoming obsessed with the idea of trying acid.

always loved them....then i went to the show and got my first dose and man...i bout started crying when i first heard them when i was dosed..ever since then ive been like a regular DeadHead. I have a hard time balencing out my music...i love the dead so much i have to force myself to listen to other stuff that i love.

Might hop on the bus this year...im just trying to figure out a lot of stuff in my life right now and psycadelics are helping me. ALthough the more i figure out the more it seems im lost in this capatalist world. *sigh*

but i will always have my shroomery and the people here at the good ole pub! :gd_icon:

im also hoping to get out of this hell hole of a state of south carolina and move out to soemwhere that there is a high concentration of like-minded free-thinking people. Im thinking marion county california or somehting like that. I just need to be aorund peopel who understand..south carolina is completely lost..you really have to work at finding good people...i spend my whole life trying to introduce people and making them understand. Hopefully when the shows come around this year i will be able to convert some people. They are good people but they just dont understand the whole dead and psycadelic movement thing...all it will take is for them to go to a show and exoperience what i expereinced and the light will shone through.

I have decided to dedicate my life to spreading the joy and love of the scene and hopfully open peoples eyes on what these people such as chinacat have done for everyone.

:heartpump: :gd_icon: PEACE :gd_icon: :heartpump:

this was in another thread i made but hell here it is again enjoy

Okay at first i thought they sucked yes I am a sinner, iam sorry.

But this is how I became into the dead

It all started with my first trip on shrooms with notapillow Marshmellow and telmahooka and a guy named chris

so we were tripping right and my music wwasn't giving the greatest vibe so notapillow gave me his dead cd that he was listening too

all of a sudden my visuals became so great it was awesome!

so now iam really into them

and i now see music completely different after doing shrooms its weird but i do

i see music now as being something that would make my trips on shrooms be more fun

no longer will i listen to bad music!

but good music like THE DEAD

and thats how i became into THE DEAD

just letting you know

P.S.

notapillow you better make me some more DEAD cds!...please

I was born in 75 and grew up listening to all kinds of classic rock. Some of which included the Dead. I wouldn't say that my parents were Deadheads per se, but they do like them. I guess the first time I really realized that I liked them was in the early 80's when touch of grey came out. That was the first Dead song that I remember liking. In my teenage years, I kinda went through an angry young man music phase, before going back to classic rock in highschool. I went to a couple deadshows in '94, but really mainly for the party scene. I dont' think that I really connected with their music till about '98, but unfortunately, that was too late to see them live. I've seen The other ones a couple times (Shoreline in '98 was an awesome 2 nights) Also seen Phil and Friends several times in Oregon, Washington area. Looking forward to seeing The Dead this summer!  :gd_icon: :yesnod:

Your story reads almost exactly like mine. Did you see SCI, Phil and Friends and Dylan at the Gorge? That was pretty alright.

No, I saw Phil and friends with dylan at Portland meadows, but didn't make it out to the Gorge. I've only been to the Gorge once, last summer when Phish played 2 nights. Awesome, magical place.
