Well, Jerry is dead.

I didn't know that all pubbers thought punk was dead.

'90s Punk Decries Punks Of Today

BERKELEY, CA?Nineties punk Drew Tolbert, 29, expressed scorn Monday for the punks of today, denouncing them as "phony poseurs unworthy of the word 'punk.'"

Above: Tolbert, who flies the flag for classic '90s punk.
"These kids today have no idea what real punk is," said Tolbert, who called himself "Steve Spew" from 1992 until May 1999, when he was forced to revert to his real name to take a job at Roberto's Custom Auto Upholstery. "Those so-called punk bands they listen to today? Sum 41? Good Charlotte? The Ataris? They're not punk. Back in the day, man, we used to listen to the real deal: Rancid, The Offspring, NOFX, Green Day. Those guys were what true punk rock was all about. Today's stuff is just a pale, watered-down imitation. There's no comparison."

Recalling the glory days of the '90s, Tolbert waxed nostalgic for a few moments before condemning today's punks.

"I saw some kid wearing a Sex Pistols T-shirt the other day?he couldn't have been more than 9 when the Pistols did their Filthy Lucre reunion tour," Tolbert said. "I was like, 'You can listen to the music, you can wear the T-shirt, but I was there.' I had fifth-row seats at that goddamn stadium, man, right up front, close enough to see Johnny Rotten's wrinkles. Did you see an original member of The Clash play during Big Audio Dynamite II's last tour? Did you see two of the four original Ramones play at the KROQ Weenie Roast in '95? You did not, but I did. I swear to God, they're like a joke, these people."

That was from an Onion article, silly.

The Sex Pistols were a boy band too. Punk has always been pre packaged rebellion, now it's just mainstream pre packaged rebellion.

Yes, yes, you're so much better than everyone because the music you listen to isn't as popular.

I've got plenty of little known stuff on my playlist, but I'm not going to completely disregard something just because it's mainstream. That's childish.

There are local punk scenes pretty much everywhere, and I think punk for the most part is about that--the underground. That's where most real punk can be found nowadays. I've gone to a few punk shows, and the punks I met there were as rebellious as ever. They were the type of people who make parents hold their kids closer, and make other people avert their eyes. Punk rock is alive and well, from what I can see.

my taste in new music is very very unpopular and therefor it would be a waste of time for me to listen for something i like on the radio.

Again, it's an article from The Onion. It's mocking that rather juvenile attitude.

Geez.

music is also an ever-evolving machine. elvis presley was considered rock and roll in his day. now, if someone puts out something like that, its considered something very different.

phluck, i will agree with you slightly on that, but I have found this quote to be very , very true: "No one has ever gone broke underestimating the taste of the american public" - cant remember ....
Everything eventually becomes mainstream, and usually when that happens, that thing sucks. Look at Bonnaroo and MTV. The only clear channel radio station i will listento is Art Bell, everything else, i ban, because they arent giving people what they want. The purpose of the art community has never been to give the people what they want, that is where Pop comes in. To me , Pop is hardly art, because it is placating to the crowd. The worlds greatest bands have stuck to their style and music and said fuck everyone else. Eventually, usually after they were dead, their art becomes popular. What will happen if all the artists of the world just give people what they think they want? we will stagnate as a culture and have slow or no growth. With that said, it is childish in some way to completely ignore something before you have heard it. There have been some pop songs that I like on some level, but they have never been profound, or amazingly great. 95% of the music on the radio is talentless fodder. Listen to NPR!!!

(just kinda rambled into an ending)

Incorrect. Many of the world's greatest bands and artists have evolved over time, and some have changed their style several times(Bob Dylan, for example).
