Are you afraid of death?
    #3730144 -

Do you feel anxiety over the fact that one day you are going to die and rot?
Would you like to live for ever or do you think that death can
be peacefull and fully accepted?
Should we avoid it at all costs by prolonging life as much as possible or should we stop one day and say: it is my time to go to sleep

Please answer outside your beliefs regarding what comes after because even if there is afterlife, some parts of you do die, and if there is no afterlife, everything dies. So let's just throw away the question of life after death, and talk about your feelings about death.

I accept my death with honor.Without death there cannot be life.By accepting my death I am humbling myself before time and fate and allowing a new generation to be born into this world and to carry on where I have left off.I will have made room for others to experience what I have.If I did not die nor did the majority of people this planet would become very overpopulated (worse than it is already)and massive violence and chaos and death of the planet would ensue shortly.

Granted the alteration of genes will one day allow humans a natural life span of hundreds of years by slowing down the genes responsible for the rate of natural aging...I believe one should not do this as it will cause great unbalance and upset to the natural order of the world. This will be very bad since everything always seeks to balance itself out sooner or later.

Re: Are you afraid of death? [Re: UnenlightenedOne]
    #3730288 -

I have two sides to my answer.

I have experienced enough in this life to emotionally feel secure about dying. From what I've observed about how our minds work and where we're headed as a society, as well as enough drug/meditation experiences that, while I don't have answers or beliefs on what happens in the afterlife, I feel as though it doesn't really matter. Experiencing what it's like to live in a society which is on the brink of discovering itself verus much of the archaic functioning of society has showen me how many of the negative aspects of life are often due to people trying to survive by adapting to their enviroment. This basic fear is what keeps societies together and also causes people to fear other societies.

But then there's the other side of it. Physiologically, I think that a fear of death is impossible to completely destroy. There is an unconscious fear of the unknown, and while I've explored life - life is still painful, which instills an unconscious fear of dying & losing control over my own situation. Watching other people who have suffered their entire lives of no fault of their own shows that life can be very out of anyone's control, no matter how strong they are.

Still, I've had enough experiences with thinking I've died that I don't actively fear death. Experiencing something which makes you think you've died - and being alright with dying - it lessens the anxiety.

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

I think most likely when someone fears death it means that we hold onto life so greatly that we wish there was more time for us to exist.

Our beliefs and death are intertwined hopelessly. I don't want to die, but it's not like I got a choice...so when it comes I'll be here. In the meantime I'm going to have fun.

I think of life as one energy, and the biological body as a place to focus that energy.

My River/bucket analogy:
Life is a river- your body is a bucket . When you are born you scoop water out of the river with the bucket, and when you die you dump it back in the river.

We move in cycles, in circles.

that's what everyone will do---take whatever meaning they 'need', or whatever meaning seems most likely to be what you meant. In this case, you have asked us to only use part of our beliefs to answer your question. I was pointing out how impossible that is. sorry if I came across not gentle enough or something.

my pool analogy was a bit weak, I'll admit. here's a better one:

"okay, do you guys agree with me that abortion is totally immoral and should be punished severly? in answering, please only use those parts of yourself which agree with me."

I mean, if you want, I could say something like, "well, I'm not afraid of death since I believe that my soul will go on, but since you've specifically asked me not to believe that for the purposes of this discussion, my answer is that I am extremely afraid of death since, for the purposes of this discussion, there is only a big blank after death."

whether or not someone is afraid of death is likely to be at least somewhat involved with what they think occurs afterwards.

You go it all wrong Zeke

I didn't say you should split yourself, I was talking about giving the issue a rest and talking about how you feel..

so what I was asking people NOT to do is this:
"Of course I'm not afraid, there is afterlife"

or

"We should all be afraid because there is no afterlife"

and what I DID ask people to do is this:
"I'm afraid etc."

or

"I'm not afraid etc."

The point was not to start a discussion about is there or is there no afterlife, but just talk about how you feel about dying.
I didn't ask you to take a certain belief and change your feelings accoarding to it. I asked you to talk about your feelings regardless of what are they influenced by, and not attack other peoples views
and turn this into a discussion about death vs. afterlife

what I DID ask people to do is this:

but my point is, the 'etc' above is probably involved with people's beliefs concerning the afterlife.
but okay, agree to disagree. just know I'm right.

edit: I can dig that you're trying to keep the discussion on a certain track. I just think it's impossible the way you tried to. IMO.

I asked you to talk about your feelings regardless of what are they influenced by

admirable, but impossible!

I'm afraid of death in the sense that I'm afraid I'll die before my life is up. Someone I know died with a very promising life ahead of him, he was the only one in his family that had any sort of motivation to pursue a higher calling and he died in a car accident. It caused great grief, greater than if say, he would've died at the age of 50 after living a long and action-filled life.
If I were to die tomorrow It would be a travesty because there is much to my life that I have yet to complete. I haven't done far too many things to leave the earth at this point. Yes, I'm doing my best to do these things to alleviate this factor but such things as life goals take time.
However, if I were to be diagnosed with terminal cancer, I would live out my remaining days as fully as possible & do my best to be happy that I achieved that which I could have in my time, however short.

I have no fear of actual death....    I do fear a painful death....
(EDIT:  I don't actually "fear" a painfull death, I just hope not to have one....)

And I am not sure what my beliefs in spirituallity are, so my answer is not based on that....

It is kinda~ like asking if one is afraid that the sun will rise tomorrow....    Sure, ther might be an outside chance that it won't, but most likely it is just a matter of time....  To bad a "natural" death is not as timely and consistant as to be able to "plan" for it....

Tell that to the moderators. Often times posts will naturally move into other areas that, while not intended by the original post, are sparked by that original post. Creating a rule that demands that we put limits like this on where the thread can evolve is not really conducive to the free interchange of ideas and perspective.

This is evidenced in this very thread. I feel that what I just typed contains a perspective worth expressing, and it fits in with the flow of the thread quite naturally, relative to the way this thread has mutated and grown. The thread itself is not in any way derailed, in fact, later in this reply I will address the main, proposed topic of this thread, as to include my perspective on it. The less limitations placed on expression and conversation equates into increased spiritual development for all.

Personally, I do not feel anxiety over death, just as I do not feel anxiety when I reflect on the fact that my heart will likely continue to beat in the next moment. I do not inflict the experience of negative, seperating emotions on myself just because a natural occurence will occur.

I'm far too immersed in this present moment and this overwhelming experience right here to consider seperating myself from this heightened state of awareness, lowering my level of consciousness by letting my mind punish itself in an ignorant effort to prevent something that cannot be prevented. To seperate oneself from the moment for any reason is insanity. :smirk:

I've already came to the full realization that I will die, and it does not effect me in any negative way. Essentially, "So what?". I already know that the experience of this individual, seperate perspective, distinct from all other facets of the universe, is an illusion that is unnecessary, and I'm well on my way to breaking that illusion, so the fear of that individual perspective one day disappearing does not exist. Therefore, in a sense, I actively seek death (not physical death, obviously) I do not upset myself emotionally when it rains, so I do not see why I should upset myself emotionally when any other naturally unfolding phenomenon carries out its unfolding.  :mushroom2:

Afraid of death? I'm not sure I even believe in it. Long after you individually are gone, there will be millions of minds out there working through pretty much the same fears and joys that you knew; folks with the same observer status as yourself. They are, to a large degree, identical with yourself.

We fear death because nature has put a bug up our ass -- a set of instincts that instruct us to preserve our own lives at all costs and hoard resources until the tasks of reproduction and the raising of the next generation are complete.

Responding to these instincts, we dance on the end of a very old string tied deeply into our reptilian brains. One day we will realize that the developement of the conscious mind has rendered these strings obsolete. Then we'll seek rational reasons for existing; rather than relying on knee-jerk responses to primal fears.

Because people are taught to avoid it at all cause from their earliest days. In time it is conditioned to be the worst possible thing in life. And it represents change, and people are afraid of it.
It allso represents the end of a conscious person, no memory no experiences, no consciousness, just rotting flesh. That's why people are afraid of it

I don't fear death; I respect it. I have had two close brushes with death where I knew at the time I could die. You never really know how you will react until you are in that situation. It's all academic until then. For me the realization brought a profound feeling of peace and the sense that time had slowed.

So no, I don't fear death. I will welcome it when it comes without wishing for it.

Not that I'm suicidal or anything, but I can't wait for my death. I will finally leave this body whether there is or isn't an afterlife (either way I'm not occupying(sp?) a human form). Death is the point of life, if it wasn't, then why would it exist?
Sort of like how enlightenment is (give or take) the goal of all religions. Death is the final frontier, I want to explore it. I guess I'm just curious. But I'm ready to die whenever.
I feel a little sorrow for the loved ones I will leave behind, but that won't matter to me after I'm dead anyhow, I suppose.
But right now I am ALIVE, so that's what I will focus on.
One step at a time, right?
And death is just one of the next steps everyone has to take.

Hell yes. I spend every waking moment in absolute quaking terror of my death. At night I dream of being buried alive and awaken feeling suffocated, and in a blind panic, at least 5 time a night. That is, when I do sleep. I fear that when I go to sleep I may never awaken, so sleep only takes me when I am too exhausted to remain concious. I quit leaving the confines of my small apartment years ago. Outside is the unknown. I could meet my death at any turn. I could be hit by a car, or exploded in a building during a terrorist attack. Don't tell me that can't happen...I saw it on TV when the World Trade Center collapsed. That was when I had a TV. I won't answer the door. Who knows what lunatic might show up at my door...drug crazed...with a gun or knife. Don't try to call as I disconnected the phone. Try as you might, but I won't let your trickery lure me into the open on the pretense of "having lunch" or "taking in a movie"...yeah...right. I got rid of the silverware and plates just the other day. I realized that these things were potential weapons that an invader might use to snuff out my life. What I eat...when I do eat...is prepackaged prepared food the delivery boy leaves at the door...I think someone has been trying to poison me with a slow acting poison, so I eat as little as possible...only enough to insure against starvation. Once a week I dart into the hallway at midnight, briefly in mortal terror, to grab the meager bag of groceries. I drink water from the toilet tank mostly (I read that it was a sure source of unpolluted water in emergencies) because to wander into my unlighted kitchen is too big of a risk...I could fall and seriously injure myself in the dark. As for lights...well don't get me started on the hazards of electricity. Locked in my little bedroom, with a chair under the door, I am safe....please don't kill me.

I'm quite the same, the day of my death will be one of great curiousity, not fear, for me. That's not to say I wouldn't fear some forms of dying, such as being buried or burned alive, but that is just the fears the immense pain and slow anxiety accompanied with the death. If I died a peaceful death in my bed, I wouldn't fear it at all.

Why resist the rotating of the earth, and the movement of time, and the slow death of the body? It is part of you, and without that movement and inevitable ending, we wouldn't have ever started.

I'm not afraid of death. But you said to answser this question outside of our own beliefs. I cna't. Or maybe I can.

Within my beliefs: I'm not afraid of death. Life doesn't end at death.

Outside of my beliefs: I'm not afraid of death. Even if life ends at death, I've had a good life. I think I've done what I was here to do.

Let me just say one more thing: Life rocks. Whether we end when our physical bodies die or we continue on in some transformed state after our physical bodies transpire, like on planet Earth, for me, has been hugely entertaing thus far. I would not change a thing, in spite of ALL OF IT.

Exactly how does one go about answering a question "outside of one's beliefs"?

I thought about that before I tried to answer the question.  I guess that's why I answered the question the way I did.  "here's the answer inside my beliefs", and "here's the answer outside my beliefs".

You know what I like about thsi forum?  There is no "right" answer.

Now, someone please bring me some nachos.  Or a big huge juicy cheeseburger.  I worked all day.  I'm in need of sustenance.

I guess the really fucked up thing about death is that it either happens in a hurried rush when you least expect it or else when you are so old and sick you lose awareness of yourself before hand. There is really no going into it prepared in any way...how would you prepare...so we really won't be aware of our last moments in life. It doesn't really matter if you are scared or not. Death takes the hero just as surely as the coward. All of us will be worm food (hopefully, if they will dispense with the noxious chemicals involved with embalming) in the end so fear is irrelevant.

I am also kind of excited about death because people argue constantly about which religion is right, if god exists, if afterlife exists, what the meaning of life is, how the pyramids were made, and many other things. When I die I will finally figure it out. But I do not want death to come early. I know it won't come until I'm ready. I'm especially excited to figure out how they built those damn pyramids. =)

Do you feel anxiety over the fact that one day you are going to die and rot?

No.

Would you like to live for ever or do you think that death can
be peacefull and fully accepted?

Yes and yes. I certainly wouldn't mind living forever, were such a thing possible, but as such a thing isn't possible...I think death can be accepted peacefully.

Should we avoid it at all costs by prolonging life as much as possible or should we stop one day and say: it is my time to go to sleep

I think this is a very personal decision. Some people are willing to accept death as it comes. Other fight death, and struggle to stay alive. Neither approach is right or wrong, they are both paths to the same end.

As for the afterlife...How can you assume anything you dream up to be anything close to what the next world might be? It is not something we mortals can know.

Only the dead know

This B.S. thread gets resurrected every year or so and everyone spouts out some nonsense according to whatever phase they believe they should be in.

Here is the bottom line: I do not dwell on death, but if I was totally conscious and relatively healty at the time, would be petrified as would ALL of you.

*Swami braces for a tsunami of denial*

Shee-it people! Every healthy, straight man here turns his head when a skimpily dressed, voluptuous woman walks by and that is only our tertiary programming. Survival, our primary programming, spurred by fear of death, is several magnitudes greater than the need to procreate.

Stall your car on the train tracks with a fast train approaching and with your car door stuck and all of your New Agey / religious philosophy will go straight out the window as your blood pressure goes through the roof, you pee your pants and beg God and mommy to save you.

The next person who sez they are not afraid, I may very well follow you, create a situation in which you think you are about to meet your demise, set up my camera crew and post the video of you wailing and weeping for ALL the Shroomery to see.

Recant now.

Swami over and out.

Sitting and thinking about death is different than facing death itself....  If you think I would not be in a complete and instictual "SURVIVE" mode at the moment of facing death, I would say you are crazy - or perhaps I would be....  ??

But, at this moment in time, I do not fear death....    :sun:

Notice the question was:

Quote:
Do you feel anxiety over the fact that one day you are going to die and rot?

Which deals with right now, not the exact moment of death itself. While I think it is possible for a person to face the MOMENT of death with peace...I think that MOST people are probably quite terrified when the moment comes.

However, that CERTAINLY doesn't mean we should be fearing death on a day-to-day basis.

that is true.

but can such programming be transcended? apparently human beings can transcend other genetic, instinctual drives, such as the urge to procreate, eat food, not set themselves on fire while meditating, not jump out of airplanes, etc. or am I wrong?

where I might be wrong is the word 'transcend'. the first time someone jumps out of a plane with a parachute on their back... even though they know cerebrally that the parachute will save their life (or at least they know the odds are really good), they haven't done it before so they probably can't know it in their gut. and yet they jump. how do they do this? is this transcendental?

humans can definitely go against their 'programming'

Our concepts of programming is just previous observed behaviour, and is not some actual absolute trait. by belieivng in 'human nature' one forces themselves into it's conditioning. by not allowing yourself to limit yourself through enforcing the belief of the limitations, letting go and thinking rationally can easily pass previous 'programmed' traits.

plus, humans are evolving rapidly. faster than it seems, methinks

Im not afraid of death, once im dead, im afraid of the "dying process", not wanting to go painfully when young, but not wanting to get old & die of dis-ease.
Is there any other way?
I just finished "The Eagle & The Rose" by Rosemary Altea, a remarkable medium who has insight into worlds unknown to us on this side. It gave me a different perspective on where we go.
I'll go when its time, yet i know that will be a while.
I think i fear loved ones death more then my own, the fear of having to go through the greiving process without them. *touch wood* Ive never had a close one depart to the next level, and i know it will be a difficult thing for me to cope with.
But we cannot dwell on these things. Fuk it , its life, part of life , is death.

Re: Are you afraid of death? [Re: OldWoodSpecter]

This is one of the virtues of a long life. A large percentages of octagenarians [people in their 80's]do not fear death. When my uncle Herman was 103, he said to me that it was "no big deal" if he didn't wake up in the morning. He lived to 106 (and might have lived longer if his daughter didn't move him from Florida to Michigan!) My father didn't evidence fear of death last summer before he died at 89, but their was some dementia present (perhaps a natural safeguard againsy such fear).

When we are still young enough to be vital, aware, active, it is natural to fear death. We know there is going to be a serious trip in store for us, perhaps with pain or with a titanic struggle. For me, it is helpful to follow some of the Tibetan Buddhist guidelines from the Tibetan Book of the Dead: Earth sinking into Water - Water sinking into Fire - Fire sinking into Air - Air sinking into Spirit - and the concommitant psychophysical sensations of heaviness, thirst, coldness, etc. - you know - dying. Maybe this is a weak analogy, but when I had a cataract surgery 10 years ago, I had coincidentally watched the proceedure on PBS a week earlier. I knew, even though I couldn't see ('cause they keep you awake except for a 5 minute unconsciousness with a short-term anaesthesia during which time they inject Xylocaine behind your eyeball) exactly when they were cutting the eyeball, when the vacuum was inserted to mascerate and withdraw the damaged lens (I could hear the pump on the floor at my right), when they were inserting the new plastic lens and smoothing it out, when they closed and bandaged the eye. It was comforting to recognize and anticipate each stage, and without any panic or fear.

Psychedelics are perhaps the best death-preparation I know of. Ram Dass recommended it in BE HERE NOW - practicing your own death. Lie down or sit in a lotus and say "this is it," as in the title by Alan Watts. In THIS Here & Now I will die. Slow the breath, thereby slowing the thoughts and the attending emotions to those thoughts. If you are into the visualizations of Yoga - the 'drops' and 'winds' and chakras, now is the time to go through the symbolic alchemy of that Yoga.

My hope is that I do not leave this world the way I came into it - kicking and screaming.
