The only drug education I had was DARE... and I think it was in 7th grade or something. Crappy, like you said! When I went to college and discovered that there were actually yucky people who did drugs (I was sooo in the dark! I thought hippies were extinct!), I did lots of research (as in online, not personally!) as to what they all were and what they did to your body. I also took a hard psych class on drugs for all those little psych majors going into drug counseling- THAT was a good move on my part! Lots of good info :smile:

I agree, must be open with parents. (No one tell my parents- please!) Going behind their backs only breaks trust. Besides, we'll know lots more about drugs than our kids, and if we can help them out and supervise a bit, so much the better. Drug education is up to the parents, not the school, or the government, or their punk pusher friends!

I think that parents must teach the kids as much as possible about drugs.

It is better to have this kind of education AND experiences in the safe environment of our home, instead of some street or school, amongst stupid junkies.

The basic principle should be to teach the kid how to see the difference between, the addictive substances that the goverment and cops sell (Heroin, cocain, alcohol and tabbaco) and the opposite, the world of psychedelics.

I am not saying that you should give drugs to your kids. But the sooner you educate them (as soon as you feel they 're gonna ask about them) the safer they are.

For example, the reason behind most of the kids that become junkies, is not only that they didn't have any education on the subject, but also because their parents where talking the same shit about all substances (you ll die if you do DRUGS and such bullshit) giving them huge amounts of misinformation (worse than no information at all)

Sooner or later the kids find out their parents where lying, and they think that if they lied about Marijuana, they must have lied about Heroin too, so they try it...

Education and specific information concerning the health risks that the use of substances involve should be a priority always.

For example:
Smoking cannabis with tobbaco in joints is something that increases addiction and the risks of cancer.

Kids should learn about the correct ways to use cannabis if they ever feel the urge to try. VAPORIZORS promote human health and/or cooking with cannabis plus, it is less likely that they will get an addiction thru these ways.

I wouldn't lie to them or freak out. If they smoked pot, I know from experience that me trying to be ultrastrict with them won't make them stop, and it'll probably lead to harder drugs. I would personally prefer them not to start smoking pot and such until 18, but if they do it before then, c'est la vie.

DARE made me want to do drugs so much because my dare teacher/officer was such an ass hole i wanted him to know he faild in teaching our class.

kids shouldnt do drugs. i once did drugs with a ten year old when iwas probably 16. felt weird. he was doing it because we were i think. too easily coerced. drugs are for some but you dont even know who you are when you are a kid!

I would educate them on drugs, give them the resources to educate themselves (with unbiased material).. give them my personal opinions.. point them in the right direction, then tell them I have faith in them making the right decisions about what to put in and not put in their body.. then let them go make their own decisions.

Shroomism, If your 10year old came up to you and wanted to try alcohol. You give him all the information available to him and he still wants to try alcohol.

I would educate them. I would treat "most drugs" the same way I would treat alcohol with my child. I would expect a level of responsibility when/if they choose to use them.

Not to say that I would "approve" of all drugs, cause there are certain drugs I would completely go apeshit over if I found my kids using them, namely heroin, crack/cocaine, etc ....

I dont mind pot, shrooms, other natural "soft" drugs, but the other "hard" stuff has proven themselves to be more dangerous. If you can OD/get phsyically addicted to it, I dont want it in my family.

Personally, I hate alcohol. So no. Alcohol is poison. I'd have about as much chance of giving my 10 year old drano as alcohol. But if he was going to do it anyway I'd rather me give it to him then have him go somewhere else to try and find it and do it behind my back. The emphasis here is on responsibility and education about what one is putting in their body.

As a parent their is also more emphasis on protecting them. A responsible parent wouldnt expose their kids to ANY(cig,alcohol) drug. I smoke cig's but not in the house. AS a parent I must lead by example. If I do drink Im at home and only have a couple of drinks. I dont get sloppy drunk around my kids.

Teaching children what the drugs are and how they will effect them is part of educating them. You must also teach them that the should wait untill they are older. That their body and mind are still growing and using drugs at a young age is a VERY bad thing.

Like sex. It is something that they have to be old enuf before they should try sex. Drugs can be just as devistating as getting pregnant in your teens.
