What to do with pete?
    #3504681 - 12/15/04 06:29 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

This little fella was left on my doorstep and I was a wondering what to do with him. I have very little experience with growing cactuses.

That's not pete, that's peyo.

^^^^what he says, stick it on some cactus soil. You can also graft it for faster growth and abundant pupping.

I think he was just giving it a name, unless pete stands for something?

Looks like a Lophophora (sp) to me. That's even better than a Pedro.

Now you need to get some Pedro's to give it some friends.

Get some good poting soil and mix in extra pearlite. Place it on a south facing window and keep the soil on the dry side.

You'd think it would be a bit more logical to learn about growing cacti before purchasing quite a sensitive one?

Oh maybe he was just giving him the name.

Pete - Peter - Pedro

Saint Peter is the english translation for spanish San Pedro.
So, i thought when he said pete he was actually thinking it was a pedro.

Plant it in some well draining cactus siol. Dont water it for about a month after you plant it. Then you can just give it a very small amount of water about once a month until summer. Then you can water it more often. Once it starts growing you can leave it as is or slice it off its roots and graft it onto a columnar cactus. Like a Pedro, Torch, Myrtillo, or other columnar cacti. If you do this then you could just leave the roots intact and more cacti will sprout from the root base. In your case I would probably leave it on its root stock until you learn more about caring for cacti and grafting. Using commonly found buttun type cacti and columnar cacti, like the ones you find at nurseries, is a good place to start with learning grafting. That way if you mess up. You will only lose a few dollars and not a rare gem such as this. Wait until the spring or summer to start learning grafting techniques. Good luck! =)
